19th century marine netsuke of mother and son. Nicely carved piece with wonderful smiling faces, black and red ink highlights. Texture on the walrus tusk core can be seen on the back of the carving. Old age line, very pleasant patina. Height 1 13/16 inches.

Late Meiji to early Taisho (1890s to 1920) lacquered wood netsuke representing a Gigaku theater mask of Baramon - a brahmin of the priestly Indian caste. Rather rare mask, superb quality wonderfully expressive face, lighter wood (probably ichii - Japanese yew wood), excellent use of silvery lacquer. Height 2 1/8 inches.

An antique Japanese bamboo Ikebana basket in a ballister shape with a cross-hatch weaving of bi-color bamboo closed woven into a design reminiscent of a classic Japanese garden bamboo fence. The body features 1/2 split bamboo with its nodules accentuating its natural form. It has a low foot with a 2 slat bottom. A large kitchen storage jar that was made in North Korea. The Jar is an example of Korean folk art, and it has hand painted blue and green designs on a white base. There is brown staining to the exterior and interior surfaces, where the contents (probably soy sauce) bleed into the stoneware. There are two side handles for carrying. A cast brass gong mounted in a Japanese style wooden frame. The two parts were joined together in Singapore where the stand was constructed out of Vietnamese wuali wood. The stand measures about 27 1/2" wide x 23 1/2" tall x 11" deep and dates to the 1980s. The bell measures about 13" in diameter x 5" deep and dates to the 19th Century or earlier. The bell has a marking of "4-P" painted inside, and the gong comes with a matching quality striker...

Old Chin tube skirt, circa 1950, from the Khumi subgroup in Burma. although deceptively simple is really extremely complex; please note in enlargements that the reverse side of this textile does not show any of the pattern on the front. This is made on a backstrap loom of very fine homespun cotton with a beaded fringe along the selvedge. Some stains and a few small holes. L: 180cm/71in and W: 44cm/17.2in

A Korean Folk Art painting of two cranes under a pine tree. The crane is the emblem of long life which is a common theme in Minhwa. The cranes have been painted on mulberry paper using natural pigments mixed in a glue base. Antique Sri Lankan ceramic figure of seated Hanuman, the Hindu god in monkey form, hero of the Ramayana and devoted friend to Rama. Seated with one knee raised and hands together in prayer, Hanuman's face is full of compassion. His tall crown denotes his status. Traces of green and white pigments remain.
