19th century Chinese rootwood carving of an ascetic dancing on the back of a turtle. The figure depicted is that of lohan Lu Ao who lived on the back oh a large turtle for 3 thousand years. Very clever piece beautifully capturing the happy attitude of the advanced being, graceful flow to the natural lines of the root defining his clothes, natural bumps on the surface perfectly imitating torn clothes.
