Ivory netsuke depicting a quail crouching on millet, carved with attention to detail on its feathers and body. The eyes are in horn.
This netsuke is signed under the base in an oval reserve and has a natural himotoshi.

NETSUKE – Old man and his dog. Good and rare model of an old man, figure of chinese sage, standing and leaning to the right,, his hand on his beard and smiling wearing a beautiful large patterned robe. A dog is sitting at his feet. In the Behrens catalogue by Henri Joly, a similar exemple is represented as Wei Peh-Yang, from the Han dynasty. Unusual 1890s - 1910s (late Meiji - early Taisho) Japanese wooden nyoi - a Buddhist scepter - made out of a natural branch or root, its head with wonderful pattern of roiling clouds. Nyoi, or Ruyi scepter is a traditional symbol of scholarship and transmission of knowledge. Lacquered in Negoro style with bright red body and black patch on the head. Nice striated wood surface texture of the branch, wonderful patina, very pleasant to the touch...

Covered box with a blue-and-white underglaze painting of geometric panels and a foliate center. A very similar example can be seen in the book “A Pocket Guide to Oriental Ceramics in the Philippines” page 80; plate 30 or exhibit 30.
Measurements: height 4.5cm, width 6.5cm.
Condition: the rim inside the box is chipped as seen in one of the provided photos. The underglaze decoration is very much visible.
