A rare and unusual Hopi sterling bracelet handwrought by deceased famous Hopi silversmith Ralph Tawangyaouma, hallmarked "H" and his thundercloud hallmark with emanating streaks of lightening. An early pioneering silversmith, working since 1910, his work is distinctive for his use of heavy gauge silver and stamping both exemplified by this bracelet. Tawangyaouma died in 1972. Gustav Adolph "Dolph" Hensel was born in Germany and came to the U.S. in 1906. He was a Lutheran minister who settled in Wisconsin and later moved to San Francisco, where he was pastor of St. John's Reform Church until 1922. Hensel was also an artist who mainly painted portraits and religious genre. He spent three years as a missionary in Africa during the 1920s, and it may have been during this period that he painted this middle eastern scene. This attractive model of a horse and rider was made during the Northern Wei Dynasty (AD 386 - 534). It is made from a grey pottery that has been cold painted in a creamy-white pigment on top of which have been applied other coloured pigments.
