Measuring 9 1/2" to the top of the finial on the lid, this blue and white faience or delft tankard is mounted with pewter lid and base, and is painted with deep rich blue scenes and foliate elements. On both sides there are scenes of a castle with trees, and the designs cover much of the surface of the tankard. Measuring 12 1/2", and finely cast in bronze, this figure represents a Faun or Satyr, one of the followers of Pan, and the original was discovered in the ruins of Pompeii in 1830. With good detail, and true to the original statue, this one has a dark patina, with verdigris visible around the head primarily, and some wear to the patina on the body. Of nineteenth century original, and most likely a Grand Tour souvenir.
