Japanese Meiji period Genroku porcelain hibachi of cylindrical form finely decorated around the circumference in underglaze blue plovers flying over crashing foaming waves set against a white ground. The base holds the mark of “Tominaga Genroku sei” together with the Genroku Studio mark. Tominaga Genroku (1859-1920) opened the Genroku kiln in Saga Prefecture in 1888 with a goal of producing fine quality porcelain. Because the Japanese used a minimum of furniture and usually sat on the floor, frequently an arm rest, kyosoku, was used either singly or in pairs. This simple wooden Meiji period arm rest would have been appreciated for both its form and finish. The wood was first burned with hot coals and then scrapped with the result that the softer sections of wood would be carved out more deeply. This process would leave the "wavy" sculptural pattern on the surface of the wood...

The design is done with "Kaioke", the shell boxes. They were used in shell matching game, a popular game played in the Edo period (1603-1868). The design that you see here is not patchwork. The silk was dyed first leaving the areas protected, then the designs were painted on later. Some needlework was added later to enhence the design. Kokeshi, wooden folk toy of NE Japan. Height: 16.75". This is an example of the "Naruko-kei" tradition of Miyagi Prefecture. The artisan was Akiyama Tadao, born on November 7th, 1932 (Showa 17.) A dry ink on paper image of mushrooms growing up along a garden stone dated 1874 by Tani Nyoi (1822-1905). The scene is signed Nyoisanjin, and dated the second month of 1874 hemmed in by origami cranes on cream satin in a field of rough pale green silk and features dark rosewood rollers. The style is very much in the literati tradition predominant during the early Meiji. The dry vigorous strokes evoke a sense of fleeting solidity, as if wind were about to blow the light paper away...

White wisteria (fuji in Japanese) drape from the gilded rim of this Kutani vase signed from the pre-eminent Kaburaki (Kaburagi) studio dating from the opening of the 20th century. The imagery is exquisitely performed with over-glaze enamels on a pastel gray ground. The vase is large at 13 inches (33.5 cm) tall, 8-1/2 inches (22 cm) diameter and is in excellent condition, with some wear to the gold rim.

A Stunning combination of works by mother and son Koyama Kiyoko (1936-present) and Koyama Kenichi (1961-1992), both in the original signed wooden boxes. Heavy pigment forms a spectral scene of a dark stone lantern viewed through the spring laden branches of maples, a dove taking flight in the fore. Peach bands of silk arranged in vertical columns stagger across six feet of Kesa interspersed with colorful patches featuring flowers and geometrics. The Kesa is backed with sumptuous orange silk.
