An exquisite large vessel by Seifu Yohei III (1851-1914) enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The mirror smooth surface is lightly tinged pink, a delicate touch only Seifu could create. Like an aged boxer, the squat muscular crab takes a stance of readiness, one claw up prepared to defend against a coming attacker. This little fellow is unusual in that it is made of thick bronze, with each joint pinned in a way that allows for some mobility. Legs splayed the creature is 9 inches (23 cm) wide, standing it is 3-1/2 inches 89 cm) tall. There is a repair to the first joint of the 2nd left leg. It dates from the first part of the 20th century.

Everything about this sencha tea implement storage cabinet is top quality; a most unusual box made up almost entirely of worm wood featuring a removable door with an inner panel of antique Chinese origin, possibly an image of a tea salesman with his baskets of leaves. A rare Japanese oversized limited edition "sosaku hanga" woodblock print titled "Black Cat, Three Kittens & Butterfly" dated 1967 by Tokuriki Tomikichiro (1902-2000). The artist's black seal is at the lower left and his black ink signature is at the lower right. The print is titled and dated in kanji in the upper right margin. A rarely encountered Japanese oversized sosaku hanga woodblock print by Asaga Manjiro (1885-1965) dating circa 1950's. Asaga Manjiro was the elder brother of Maekawa Senpan. He was known for his Noh theater and Otsu-e prints. Paper size: 20 1/4"V x 15 3/8"H (image: 17 5/8" x 12 7/8"). Excellent condition with full margins. Never framed. Traces of paper residue from the original folder remain on the back at the left top and bottom corners.

A group of three clambering turtles in fine detail dating from the opening of the 20th century (later Meiji) stamped on the base Keishin and enclosed in a period wooden box. The group is roughly 8 inches (20 cm) long, 3 inches (7.5 cm) tall and in fine condition but for one old chipped toe on the back foot of the largest turtle (see close-up).

This pair of Japanese handmade long square cut nails are 5" long and appear to have never been used. The nail heads are solid and shaped into a hemisphere. The silver colored decorative metal escutcheons have scalloped edges and markings to represent a flower. The escutcheons are just under 1" in diameter and have a squared center hole which exactly fits the nail shank.

An attractively carved okinomo, depicting three sparrows on a branch, made in Japan during the Meiji period (1868-1911) for export to Europe or the U.S. Condition very good. There is one crack which runs through the centre of the branch and finishes as a hairline on the first birds head...

Because the Japanese used a minimum of furniture and usually sat on the floor, frequently an arm rest, kyosoku, was used either singly or in pairs. This simple wooden Meiji period arm rest would have been appreciated for both its form and finish. The wood was first burned with hot coals and then scrapped with the result that the softer sections of wood would be carved out more deeply. This process would leave the "wavy" sculptural pattern on the surface of the wood.
