A Momoyama-early Edo period gold screen depicting a happy god of fortune drinking while being pulled by deer in his elaborate wagon through a rocky landscape. The paper is wrinkled and creased with age, and the color worn, exuding a great sense of antiquity. The bold patterns and rich texture of the Edo period brocade border amplifies that feeling. The screen is 22-1/2 x 56 inches (57 x 142 cm) and has a shaped lacquered wood frame retaining antique paper backing with some repairs.

Kokeshi, wooden folk toy of NE Japan. Height: 24". This is an example of kokeshi made at Akiu Onsen (Akiu Hot Spring) in Miyagi Prefecture. It is one of the older kokeshi-making sites in Tohoku (NE Japan.) It is a large doll, standing 2 feet high! The artisan was Satou Noboru, who was born on June 10th, 1932 (Showa 17.) Large Chinese Jin Dynasty (1125-1234 AD) Honan brown glazed truncated meiping vase decorated with cut glaze concentric circular designs on the shoulders. Two strap handles flank both sides of the short neck. 11"H x 11 1/2" diameter. Very good overall condition. There are a few scattered small pit holes, which are original production imperfections (see enlargement 3). Some scratches in the glaze are evident as is typical for a piece of this age.
