Of Janus form, with faces and bird beaks on opposing sides, this large food storage vessel is from the Chambri Lakes region, near the Sepik River in New Guinea. Formed of the local clay by the women, the decoration and paint was applied by the men, in honor of ancestral beings. Utilized to store the flour of the sago palm, the vessels were also used as currency in trading with other indigenous groups. An antique lover’s dream is this 1920’s vintage platinum and diamond engagement ring. Six prongs are holding the old-mine diamond in the crown like basket setting.
