Footed Toothpick holder in a checkered murrine pattern of a red and yellow centered flower on lattimo alternating with transparent rose-colored trefoils on a cobalt ground. Holder stands 3 inches (7.6 cm) tall and is 2 1/4 inches (5.7 cm) in diameter. Examples of this pattern can be found in the book on Fratelli Toso by Leslie Pena on pages 86 and 87. No chips, cracks or repairs. Circa 1960.

From the island of Malaita in the Solomon Islands, this alafolo, or war club, is in very fine condition, with a rich dark patina. Measuring just under 40", it still retains much of the kaolin inlay and shows surface irregularities from the hand work. It dates to the late 19th or early 20th century. Among Gerardo Lopez's most collected clamper designs, I love to refer to this specific creation as his "flames" bracelet because of the way the repousse rises in vivacious twists and twirls. This is indeed an impressive piece - like most of Lopez's clampers are - but not overwhelmingly involved and a sheer pleasure to wear. Its patina is warm and its hinge is tight as if it has been treated very gently throughout its long life...
Kokeshi, wooden folk toy of NE Japan. Height: 4.25". This is an example of the "Yajiro-kei" tradition of Miyagi Prefecture. The artisan is Niiyama Manabu, who was born on October 13th, 1930 (Showa 5). It is not dated, but was most likely made within the past 20 years.
