ash blasted and bursting with inclusions, this chawan tea bowl by Otani Shiro comes with everything you could want from this representative Shigaraki potter.  Over a terracotta clay burnt ash gray a smattering of pale flying ash provides the backdrop for molten drips of foggy green and yellow shizen yu glaze.  The shape conforms beautifully to the palm, showing the master skill of this important artist.

A deep pool of rice wine awaits the drinker in this stately form by Miwa Kazuhiko enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Cup of Deep Abundance (Fuchifuchi-hai). The name comes from the deep part of a river (fuchi) where fish tend to gather. Outside this white glaze crawls and plays over the slightly blue tinged glaze beneath it, which covers the rough Hagi clay.

Gold nuggets gleam on the deep lavender and black surface of this organic form by Inayoshi Osamu enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Kurinuki Kinsai Mizusashi. Kinsai is literally gold color, and here the artist has embedded gold into the surface, allowing it to expand and bubble out in the heat of the firing process. The effect of this on the dark matt surface is both striking and original...

Large, oburi style Shiro-Hagi chawan with notched wari-kodai and profuse crackling around the bowl. I have no idea who made this large chawan as I can not read the seal, partially covered with glaze.

The are a few small spots of glaze loss as can be seen in the pictures, but all in all, this is a very handsome and strong chawan that looks great on a shelf. No box.

An eccentric crusty bowl, very different, by Hashimoto Tomonari enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Raku Yaki Yohen Chawan. Unlike his normal burnished and color ridden surfaces, this bowl is ominous, matte, shot through with pin-hole-textures and rivulets streaming from the rim. It is like something from deep within the universe, an ancient traveler which has been charred and scarred on its way through the atmosphere...

Mint and large Japanese pottery tea bowl of Hagi Ware, made by one of the most famous and creative potters of Japan, Seigan Yamane. Light brown clay is coated with colorful glazes.
