Shizen-yu ash glaze and deposits crust the surface of this large Shigaraki Tsubo by Hoshino Ryosai enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 13 inches (33 cm) tall, 10 inches (25 cm) diameter and in excellent condition.
Ryosai was born in Fukuoka, on Japan’s Southern Main Island in 1939, and was raised during the impoverished war years. Perhaps it is this will to live instilled through hardship which invigorates so much of this dynamic artists work...

A slight deviation from the norm, here is a scroll depicting the character Tsubo by Shigaraki artist Koie Ryoji in liquid strokes, the outer lines dissipating into the paper canvas. Ink on paper in a dark cloth border and unusual metal glazed ceramic rollers. It measures 19 1/2 by 42 inches (49, 5 x 107 cm) and is in fine condition.

A very large notched foot chawan by Hagi master; Yamane Seigan. This Hagi glazed boxed chawan measures 5.5” X 3.6” and is in excellent condition. This chawan is has heavily animated keshiki landscape and feels wonderful in the hands. The glaze of this chawan wonderfully accentuates the form and foot of the iron rich clay body and powerful form. This is Seigan at his best!

A large, exhibition quality, bold and timeless Oni-Shino chawan by the master potter and legendary personality; Tsukigata Nahiko (1923-2006). This rare wood fired chawan has a wide variety of surface effects caused by the interplay of iron and Shino glazes and an intense fire with the face exhibiting a satiny iron face (tetsu-omote). The intentionally distorted shape fits the hand well and the lip, mikomi and kodai all act to balance out a truly inspired work by a potter of the highest level...

Large and powerful Shiro-Hagi chawan by veteran Hagi potter; Mashita Tadashi. This chawan though appearing pure white, has a nice blush of pink through out portions of the bowl. The lip is slightly lobed and created an elegant appearance. The chawan measures 5.2" x 3.5". This Shiro-Hagi resembles the works of Miwa Kyuwa and Miwa Kyusetsu for a fraction of the price.

A large Shinshoku Ware-tsubo eroded through natural processes during firing with a shattered rim attached to the body at the shoulder. This piece is a virtual textbook on Yohen firing effects. Tamadare, Shinshoku, koge and other effects are supplanted by a large white kutsuki on the front, all under the shadow of the shattered rim fused to the shoulder. A tower of geometric in silver and red by Kawano Eichi enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The pebble textured surface and straight lines of the side are juxtaposed by the irregular and angular patterns of silver, like the outline of stones leading to a temple cast in shadow across the sides. Haunting shapes are scraped into the raw clay like some ancient Nazcan riddle on this huge ball vase by Sato Kazuhiko. The vase is 15-1/2 inches (40 cm) tall, 17 inches (43 cm) diameter and in excellent condition. There is no box. Kazuhiko (b. 1947) is a widely displayed artist and author of many books on the ceramic arts. For more information on this artist see Modern Japanese Ceramics in American Collections (1993). This classic Mingei hanaire is by Mashiko potter Hyuga Munetoshi, a one time student of the Hamada kiln (?). Glazed in an exceedingly rich tessha/kaki iron glaze the pot has wax resisted decoration of flowers on either side of the pot. Created for both function and decoration , this pot is a great example of modern Mingei influenced Mashiko pottery.
