Although I do not often use the term, this is a masterpiece by Iga artist Banura Shiro enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Even under the glaze the texture of the clay is clearly visible, rivulets of green glass arching around the body with slashes of color over the red terracotta. This work is a work of famous ceramist Deishi Shibuya of Hagi ware.
It is a Oni-Hagi Hiissen Chawan. Hiissen is Japanese and is a meaning referred to as Washing a brush.
Since form resembles the container from which a brush is washed, it came to be refered to as Hiissen Chawan. The Hagi ware clay with which three kinds of grounds were mixed is used for the clay of this work (Daido, Mishima, Mitake).
