Pastel on paper laid on board, the subject fruits and a porcelain cup on a tabletop, a vase with at top center, 20" by 15 1/2" (27" by 23" as framed), signed at lower right "Olds" (MARION VALE OLDS 1901-1993). The work is a fine example by this talented woman artist, the cramped artistic space and carefully thought-out arrangement of the objects in that space indicative of an artist of great talent who is taking from Cezanne as well as the WPA (I would guess the age as circa 1930's or 1940's)...

A PAIR of early portraits in pastel on paper, of a middle-aged man and woman (about 45 or 50 years of age), the male portrait signed along the lower right edge "E. Yohn 1841". The works measure 20 3/4" by 17 3/4" as framed. Considering the advanced age, condition of these fragile works is excellent. There is a small edge tear at extreme upper edge of the female portrait...

Pastel on paper laid on thick paperboard, 22" by 18", unframed, signed at lower left and dated 1921 by the artist, DAVID COMBA ADAMSON (1859-1926). In this drawing the artist shows his skill with the pastel medium. This is a sensitive portrait of an attractive young lady against an interesting striped pattern background, a red rose before her. There is no indication as to who she might have been (no writing/labels on reverse)...

A lovely pastel drawing of a young woman, with skilled modeling of the face and careful attention to hair and spring blossom background, not signed on front but sliver of preserved old paper affixed to backing by a modern day framer states subject is one Ruth Noble, age 17, the work drawn by one Mildred Stillman, art teacher at Wyoming Academy, Kingston, Pennsylvania. Kingston is in northeastern Pennsylvania not far from Scranton and near Wilkes-Barre...

Eugenia Grant's floral works in pastel are amazing achievements, often leading people to think they are prints. This is a glorious original work, 22" by 27", framed behind glass (28" by 33" framed), and signed at lower right. The realistic depiction of flowers, Asian porcelain vessels, patterned textile backdrop, and reflection in table top, is very impressive indeed. I have seen a number of works by this highly underrated artist, and they always feature this impressive attention to detail...

This is a fine pastel on paper work, 9" by 11 1/2" inside the mat, 15 1/4" by 17 1/4" as simply framed in wood, the subject a low desert with saguaro cactus near a desert wash at right center, a range of brooding desert peaks in the distance. The work is signed by the artist on the original mat at lower left corner. Condition of the drawing is superb...

A PAIR of pastel on paper drawings, each measuring 18" by 24", though they are currently in different frames, one 32" by 38", the other 27" by 32 1/2", the optical illusion making one appear larger than the other. Both works are signed with initials "CA" at bottom right. I confirmed with a Swiss auction house that they are not by Swiss artist Cuno Amiet, therefore they are offered as-is, unattributed. Most likely, they are of American origin...

A PAIR of gold-framed, antique pastels of fruits, one a pear and grapes, the other peaches, apparently unsigned, but very much in the style of and possibly by the known late nineteenth century American pastel artist JOHN BOWER, who was known for precisely this kind of work. Each drawing measures 7 1/2" by 9 1/2", and frames are identical size at 13" by 15". Affixed to the frame reverse are typed labels proclaiming each to be "Unsigned"...

Eugenia Grant's floral works in pastel are amazing achievements, often leading people to think they are prints. This is a glorious original work, 21" by 26 3/4", framed behind glass (33" by 39" framed), and signed at lower right. The realistic depiction of the pink roses, flowers, porcelain vessel, curtain backdrop, and reflection in table top, is very impressive indeed. I have seen a number of works by this highly underrated artist, and they always feature this impressive attention to detail...

Fine pastel drawing of a seated young woman, on gray-blue paper, 18 1/2" by 12 1/2" (23 1/2" by 17 1/2" in mid century white frame), unsigned. The artist was clearly very skilled but unfortunately failed to sign the work. An elegant interior is suggested by the orange pottery vessel at far right. The young lady's clothing suggests that the work could be old----maybe early 20th century, despite appearing to be quite fresh. Once again, it is difficult to determine without a date or artist name...

Pastel on paper, 20" by 25" and silvery frame 3 3/4" wide on a side, the subject a schnauzer dog in an arid mountain landscape possibly in the Palm Springs, California area. The drawing is by an artist skilled in the use of pastel. JOSEPHINE CRUMRINE (1917-2005) of Alaska was perhaps best known for her work depicting Eskimos and other familiar Alaska themes such as sled for the menus of the Alaska Steamship Company, but she also experimented with other subject matter. I recently sold a scene ...

A beautifully executed work in pastel, 18" by 25 1/2", in a narrow metal poster-type frame behind glass with no mat, signed at upper left and dated there 1977 in Roman numerals (LXXVII)) by the noted well listed American artist SHELDON C. SCHONEBERG (1926-2013). At upper right, he titled the work "Grosvenor Park, London". The vigorously worked trees, sweep of the curved interaction of park and street, and small cars, flags and figures make for a handsome work. Schoneberg was born in Illinois ...

This is a fine pastel of a pair of dogs---Labradors possibly---(I welcome input from dog lovers)--one named at bottom "Lozi", the other, "Pamuzi", the drawing signed at lower left with what appears as "Janaa Olsen" or "Janaa Owen" or similar, and dated there 1988. It appears to be a portrait commissioned by an owner who was obviously very attached to these particular canines, who appear at this time to have been in the prime of their lives. On the reverse is a label from The Coln Gallery in En...

Beautiful impressionist pastel drawing of a landscape in California's high desert outside Los Angeles, 12 1/2" by 19", 19 1/2 by 26 1/2" in attractive old gold strip framing (but with no glass), and signed "R W" and dated 1940 at lower right corner. The artist was surely a talent but I am unable to connect the initials to a known artist. Strangely, the work was found "high and dry" in Asbury Park, New Jersey---and evidently the work also spent some time in Chicago on its way east, having been...

Large (22" by 36", unframed) pastel drawing on heavy paper, which has been in turn laid on canvas, signed at lower left center by the well-listed American landscape artist GEORGE DOUGLAS BREWERTON (1827-1901). The impressive drawing features a Hudson River School-like landscape with no figures, the hazy ball of the sun dominating the sky. The overall effect is one of Luminism. Brewerton led a fascinating life for his times. Born in Newport, Rhode Island to a military family (West Point), he ...
