Watercolor on paper, unsigned, 14" by 18" (19" by 23 1/2" as framed/matted), American, dating likely from the late thirties to the mid fifties. The work is obviously by a talented artist, considering the way in which the flowering trellis vine has been depicted. There is a Somerville, New Jersey label on reverse from the framing outfit, from 1959, naming an Earl Potter from Potterville, NJ, but I don't believe this is the artist's name...

Watercolor on paper, 9 1/8" by 6 3/4" inside the mat (14 1/4" by 11 5/8" in its simple green frame), unsigned, the subject a Spanish (most likely) church tower with arched and arcaded breezeways. I've opened this and don't find a signature nor other information. My best guess is that this would be one of the famous buildings in the south of Spain, such as Granada, Sevilla, etc., though I suppose it possible that it could be elsewhere in the Mediterranean region...

English watercolor paintings on both sides of the paper, circa 1880, one side a lovely classic scene of several cows on a dirt track by a cottage with branching tree, the other side sheep grazing around a tree, a church steeple in the distance. The paper measures 11" by 15" and 17 1/2" by 13 1/2" in a modern frame (I suggest discarding the non-glare cloudy style glass). There is no signature nor other indication of authorship...

A watercolor painting of a fountain on an elegant seaside or lakeside property, 8 1/2" by 6" (12 1/4" by 9 3/4" framed), signed at lower right by listed Swiss artist JOSEPHINE VERNAY (1861-?). Vernay's birth/death dates are suspect, or possibly confused with those of her brother, artist Francois Joseph Vernay; one source lists hers as 1864-1950, the same as her brother's. My brief net research has failed to turn up a painting dated after 1918...

Watercolor on paper painting 19" by 24" (27" by 34" frame in which found is available at no extra cost), the subject northeastern-style clapboard homes in late autumn season, signed at lower right by artist BEN ROSEN. The painting projects a certain naive charm as a bird's eye view has the viewer contemplating the scene from a unique perspective. There are small edge tears at extreme top that would be entirely hidden by new mat/framing...

A contemporary watercolor painting, the subject an arid landscape with adobes and a flat-topped butte in the distance, signed at lower left by artist "Kimura" who dated the work '97. The piece measures 9" by 6" (15 1/2" by 12 1/2"). The barbed wire foreground fence adds to the Southwest ambience. Condition is excellent, frame has slight wear.

Old (possibly 19th century, early 20th at latest) American watercolor painting of a small cove and beach, unsigned, 9" by 12 5/8" inside the present mat (13" by 16 3/4" in modern framing), with some experimental sketching by the artist on the reverse. On that side he/she wrote "Aug. 19 water deeper, especially in the curve". The drawing is by a talented hand which unfortunately did not sign it. Could be as early as 1880's, as late as about 1930 I would imagine...

A contemporary watercolor painting of a flowering shrub, unsigned, 12" by 18" (20" by 26" in attractive gold frame in good condition), possibly of east coast origin as the framer's sticker is from Boston. This reminds somewhat of mountain laurel, the state flower of Connecticut, but that is pure speculation (mountain laurel is usually more white though there are pink and dark pink varieties). In any event, botanical questions aside, this watercolor is nicely executed and in excellent condition...

A late 20th century watercolor painting , 10 1/2" by 14 1/2" inside the mat, 14 1/2" by 18 1/2" in gold framing, the scene three figures in front of a walled house, the figures with loads carried on heads or in traditional pole baskets. There are two red chop marks at lower right. On the reverse is a rubber stamp of Suvida Frame, and Thai lettering. The poetic work is clean and highly decorative. Allow for reflections in a few images.

A pleasant watercolor painting of a small lake in what appears to be a mountain setting, 8 1/2" by 5 5/8" (13" by 10 1/2" framed), signed at lower left with what appears to be the name Howard B. Smith. I had at first believed this by listed eastern-born, California artist HOWARD E. SMITH (1885-1970), known as an illustrator, portraitist, landscape painter, and etcher. However now I believe this by a Howard B...

One of two works in my shop by apparently the same artist, (acquired at different times---the other JB01670): a watercolor on paper, 10 3/4" by 7 1/2" (17" by 14" in its simple green frame), signed illegibly (faint, at lower right), the subject a Spanish (most likely) church tower, the foreground dominated by impressive arches and columns. I have included three photos of the faint signature and leave it to the viewer to try to decipher it...

Watercolor on paper, 8" by 11 1/4" (12" by 15 1/2" framed), the scene a shallow, reedy small river and its grassy banks, a few majestic trees completing the peaceful scene. The artist signed his name "E. Starker" at lower left in pencil. Starker was a painter in Stuttgart and Leonberg. He studied at the Akademy Stuttgart with Kappis and Grünenwald and in Karlsruhe with Schönleber...

Watercolor painting of a blue-eyed dark haired younger man with long sideburns, seated in a chair, circa 1860's, possibly a bit earlier, apparently unsigned, 9" by 6 1/2" (12 1/4" by 10 1/4" framed). The drawing shows some evidence of 150 years of age, with some light surface scratches in a few spots, a circular discoloration on the paper at left wall, and a little other foxing/discoloration. Found in Florida. I would lean towards the work being of American, rather than English, origin.

Watercolor on paper of a small white painted house in a sparse landscape, the sheet measuring 15" by 22", signed at lower right with "N.W.S." (National Watercolor Society) by the listed California watercolor artist ROBERT UECKER (1929-2005). Uecker was born in Los Angeles and won a five year scholarship to the Chouinard Art Institute, where he was instructed by the likes of Rex Brandt, Ed Reep, and Pruett Carter. Later in life he became a teacher himself, as well as owner of art supply stores ...

Old American watercolor painting, early 1900's, featuring a leafless tree in what is apparently late autumn, a flash of color in the middle distance giving an indication that winter has not completely arrived. The work appears unsigned. Measurements are 15 1/4" by 10" and 18 1/4" by 12 1/2" in the old frame, which shows wear. The watercolor itself has survived the decades in good condition.

A watercolor on paper 10 1/2" by 21 1/4" (21" by 33" in blue laminate framing) featuring a tropical dock scene replete with coconut palms, a small sailing craft, and boathouse, signed at lower right with what appears as "Ehrlich". I have not been able to link an obvious listed artist name to this work. The hand is sure and talented and the piece is in excellent fresh condition.

A beautifully painted pair of framed watercolour photo renderings c1880-1900. They consist of a young man and woman in mid-Victorian dress; each image is done on Victorian photographic print paper and they measure 6-3/4" x 4-3/4". It was common to overpaint old and fading photographs, however these are of such fine quality and detail that they were most likely done from a mirrored projection, another common method of photographic rendering (we can't find any photographic detail under the paintin...
