Detailed Indonesian painting in the classic style from the island of Bali, Indonesia, painted in tempera on cotton canvas laid on board, measuring 21 1/4" by 17". The painting is unusually well executed compared to many from this "school" of painting; the artist was of above average talent, though he or she did not sign the work. Note the expressions on the faces, the intensity of the dragon, the spotted mysterious forest creature monster at lower left. Condition is excellent...
Oil on Masonite painting, 18" by 7 3/4" (24" by 13 3/4" as framed, with liner), the subject two young girls and their classic olla-type water or grain pots. of the Southwest. This is likely a New Mexico or Arizona scene, executed in tan and brown earth tone colors. The painting is signed in black at lower left "Ch...
Watercolor on paper landscape of lush green mountains of Kauai, a mother and her child, palm trees and an historical one story building, the Waoli Social Hall, originally built in 1841 during whaling days as a mission church, the painting measuring 18 1/2" by 25" inside the present mat (presently unframed), signed at lower right "D Williams". The work is not dated but I would guess it would have been created around the late 1960's or early 1970's...
Oil on canvas, 9 1/2" by 13 14" (18" by 22 1/2" as framed), signed in red at lower left "J. A. McClurg" and dated there with what looks like "1900" or "1908"...
This is a late 19th century American painting by an anonymous artist, from the heart of the Victorian age. It measures 16" by 24" on the original stretchers (21 1/4" by 30" including the frame and probably original red velvet liner)...
Oil on canvas, 18" by 12 1/2", unframed, signed at lower right "F M Shane", and inscribed on reverse of the canvas, "Loveland Canon/Road to Estes Park/Colorado/1925". This work is somewhat primitive but the artist has created an interesting painting. There is a listed artist Frederick Emmanuel Shane (1906-1992), a Missouri regionalist who also painted in Colorado; conceivably this could be an early work of that artist, for some reason signed "F M Shane"...
PAIR of oils on beveled edge thick wood pine panel, each 11 3/4" by 6 1/4" (and 1 7/8" wide silvery modern era frames), each signed at lower right in flowing script "MORA", not dated but likely circa 1880's to 1890's. There are a number of artists listed with this name but so far I can't definitively attribute these to one of them...
Pastel on paper, 21 1/2" by 16" and narrow frame, signed at lower right by well listed WAYNE LA COM (1922-). La Com is known for his skilled watercolors in the 20th century California Scene style. See the askart listing on him and his work. Photos taken at angles to minimize reflections.
For the collector of vintage plein air art, this is a classic drawing on tan paper executed in Italy in the year 1924 by well listed, frequently auctioned California plein air artist DANA BARTLETT (1882-1957). This drawing measures 8 1/2" by 11 1/2" inside the framing (12 3/8" by 15 1/4" as framed). It is signed in a longhand signature at lower left, and at lower right is inscribed "Venice Italy" and the date 1924 once again...
Gouache on paper, 19" by 12" (29" by 22" as nicely framed in complementary silver and gray), the subject "Iceland Poppies" written in pencil at lower left in addition to the artist's signature and what looks to be "61" as the date of execution--it's very small and hard to read. This is a rather typical example of the work of the noted California artist, JOAN IRVING (BRANDT) 1916-1995. It is very impressionistic and spontaneous and sure in execution, and in very fresh, excellent condition...
English or Scottish oil on canvas, (or, possibly a continental Europe scene executed by a British artist), 20" by 30" (26" by 36" as framed), signed at lower right "David Dundas", showing a peaceful high mountain lake with distant snowy mountains. I do not see a listing for the artist but the painting has a professional touch and is very decorative and satisfying. Note the reflections, the sky/high clouds, lighting, composition...
Large example of the work of the much-storied American artist "T. Bailey", circa 1910, measuring 24" by 36" (32 1/2" by 44 1/2" framed). This is the largest example I have been able to find, after a search of the auction records...
Oil on canvas painting of a small house in the trees, 22" by 26" (28" by 32" framed), signed at lower right "Stahl" and dated there "42", titled on reverse "In Laurel Canyon" and signed and dated again there. This is an early work by the important, well-listed American illustrator artist and art educator BENJAMIN A. STAHL (1910-1987). Stahl was Chicago-born, and traveled to Mexico and apparently California as well, before settling into Weston, Connecticut and eventually, Sarasota, Florida...
This is a beautiful DOUBLE SIDED watercolor dated 1883 by the hand of listed American 19th century artist BENJAMIN FITZ (1855-1891), measuring 11 1/2" by 18 3/4" plus about 3 1/2" of liner and modern frame. I am not sure as to the authorship of the loose dry landscape on the reverse, which might be later and by a totally unrelated hand. The subject matter of the primary, signed painting is a rural scene of farm buildings by a small pond on which swim two ducks, their trails in the water plainly...
Watercolor on paper, 13 1/2" by 19 1/2" inside the mat (20 1/2" by 26 1/2" as framed), signed at lower left "Roy E. Swanson" and titled in pencil on the backing board "Green Valley Church", along with the original $340.00 price. This watercolor is by a skilled hand, though I cannot seem to find a listing for the artist. There is a listing for a RAY Swanson (Cowboy Artists of America) is listed, but this is not that artist. Regardless, the work is excellent, reminding one of the California Sc...
For the fans of the "Big Eye" paintings, here is a pair of mid century retro style works in oil on board, each 23 1/2" by 11 1/4", and each signed at lower right. The signatures are hard to decipher; I'm guessing "Balmiani" or "Dalmiani". If I am reading them at all correctly, I am not able to tie these names to any of the listed, recognized big eye painters. Regardless of authorship, these are sure to please the devoted big eye collector. One of them has some light to moderate surface scuff...
Oil on canvas, simply framed in wood, the canvas measuring 35 1/2" by 30" (90 cm. by 76 cm.) on the stretchers, signed at lower right in the wet paint and dated there "10-4-1996". This is a work by a popular and well regarded Indonesian painter, DJOKO PEKIK (1938-). The works of Pekik (sometimes spelled Pekek) have sold to at least the $40,000 level at auctions of Southeast Asian paintings in Singapore and Hong Kong. The artist was discussed, curiously, in an "Art in America" 1996 article: "...
Oil on canvas still life of white flowers in a vase on a table top, a decorative curtain at left, 30" by 25", unframed, signed at lower left and inscribed there "For Mother & Dad", by the listed California artist EUGENE DUNLAP (1916-1999). Dunlap studied with the likes of Jack Wilkinson Smith, J. Mason Reeves and Nell Walker Warner. An exhibitor at the Golden Gate International Exhibition in 1939, he for a good part of his life was a part of the Laguna Beach art scene. Today Dunlap's landscap...
