There is a listed artist Frederick Emmanuel Shane (1906-1992), a Missouri regionalist who also painted in Colorado; conceivably this could be an early work of that artist, for some reason signed "F M Shane"...

For the collector of vintage plein air art, this is a classic drawing on tan paper executed in Italy in the year 1924 by well listed, frequently auctioned California plein air artist DANA BARTLETT (1882-1957). This drawing measures 8 1/2" by 11 1/2" inside the framing (12 3/8" by 15 1/4" as framed). It is signed in a longhand signature at lower left, and at lower right is inscribed "Venice Italy" and the date 1924 once again...

Gouache on paper, 19" by 12" (29" by 22" as nicely framed in complementary silver and gray), the subject "Iceland Poppies" written in pencil at lower left in addition to the artist's signature and what looks to be "61" as the date of execution--it's very small and hard to read. This is a rather typical example of the work of the noted California artist, JOAN IRVING (BRANDT) 1916-1995. It is very impressionistic and spontaneous and sure in execution, and in very fresh, excellent condition...

Oil on canvas painting of a small house in the trees, 22" by 26" (28" by 32" framed), signed at lower right "Stahl" and dated there "42", titled on reverse "In Laurel Canyon" and signed and dated again there. This is an early work by the important, well-listed American illustrator artist and art educator BENJAMIN A. STAHL (1910-1987). Stahl was Chicago-born, and traveled to Mexico and apparently California as well, before settling into Weston, Connecticut and eventually, Sarasota, Florida...

This is a beautiful DOUBLE SIDED watercolor dated 1883 by the hand of listed American 19th century artist BENJAMIN FITZ (1855-1891), measuring 11 1/2" by 18 3/4" plus about 3 1/2" of liner and modern frame. I am not sure as to the authorship of the loose dry landscape on the reverse, which might be later and by a totally unrelated hand. The subject matter of the primary, signed painting is a rural scene of farm buildings by a small pond on which swim two ducks, their trails in the water plainly...

For the fans of the "Big Eye" paintings, here is a pair of mid century retro style works in oil on board, each 23 1/2" by 11 1/4", and each signed at lower right. The signatures are hard to decipher; I'm guessing "Balmiani" or "Dalmiani". If I am reading them at all correctly, I am not able to tie these names to any of the listed, recognized big eye painters. Regardless of authorship, these are sure to please the devoted big eye collector. One of them has some light to moderate surface scuff...

This is a work by a popular and well regarded Indonesian painter, DJOKO PEKIK (1938-). The works of Pekik (sometimes spelled Pekek) have sold to at least the $40,000 level at auctions of Southeast Asian paintings in Singapore and Hong Kong.
