Colorful, interesting watercolor with a modernist, almost Expressionist feeling, unsigned, 16" by 12" (23" by 17" in present frame). There is a label on the backing from the Fenway Art Center in Boston, which was run by two listed artists, Richard and Giragos Der Garabedian, leading me to believe that this could have been work by one of them, even though the style/subject does not fit with their known works...

Chinese fan painting of two cats by the artist Xu Beihong. The cats, one with eyes wide, the other asleep, crouch on a rock under a leafy branch. Xu Beihong (1895-1953) was born in rural Yixing, Jiangsu Province. His father was a private school teacher and Xu began painting at the age of 9. He traveled to Tokyo to study art, returning to China to start teaching at Peking University Arts School...

An original very detailed watercolor drawing of a man who looks to be a commoner, drawn on paper laid on thin card or directly on card, 7 3/4" by 4 1/8" (14" by 11" in modern frame), signed at bottom with the distinctive signature of mid 19th century renowned academic painter and draftsman JEAN LOUIS-ERNST MEISSONIER (1815-1891). The drawing is finely crafted, the lone figure vignetted, the background empty. Meissonier was famous in Europe in his day, that fame buying a lavish lifestyle...

Oil on canvasboard painting of a woman with basket on head in tropical town street, 12" by 16", 17" by 21" framed, signed at lower right Paul Katzman. The FRAME is most interesting, with a geometric cross-hatching pattern that would complement a Southwest themed painting.

Large oil by J. Syer (1815 - 1885) British, this pleasant country scene was painted in 1870. It measures 51 1/2" wide x 38" high on the inside of the frame. On the back of the canvas there is a label that reads "Scene on the River Llugwy, North Wales." and says to keep the label attached for authenticity. This canvas has been relined, and there is a very tiny puncture on the left side near the fence.

Oil on canvas laid on masonite still life painting of pink grapes and a vase, 25" by 30" (31 1/2" by 36 1/2" as framed), signed at lower right by artist G. ANSON WHITE. Strangely, I can find only minimal references to an artist by this name, despite the amazingly skillful and sensitive rendering of the clusters of grapes. In such cases I am often left to wonder if perhaps the artist was actually someone well known who chose to sign the work with a pen name for one reason or another...

Old mountain and canyon landscape with foreground water and fog in the trees, 22 1/2" by 12 3/4" framed, unsigned, painted on old gray art board. The work likely dates to about the first quarter of the 20th century or possibly last years of the 19th. The vertical format would complement a narrow small wall. Old gold frame has some chip losses especially at corners...

Terauchi was born December 9,1891. In 1910 he entered the private school Kiyoteru Kuroda, and later became a member of the Hakuda Association...

An unstretched oil on canvas of a rocky forested coast, presumably in Finland, signed at lower right and dated there 1936 by listed Finnish artist TOIVE JYRINKI (1895-1988). The canvas measures 13 1/4" by 18 3/4". There does not appear to be a lot of information on the talented artist. The scene is reminiscent of much 19th century American art such as paintings of the rocky coast of Maine. Condition is vintage good, needs to be mounted and framed.

An extremely fine watercolor and gouache on organic substrate miniature portrait done by Henry Benbridge, painted in his crisp, realistic style. The sitter is attired in a blue coat and a white ruffled shirt and collar, the fabrics of which are carefully and richly depicted, a characteristic of Benbridge's work. The surround to the painting is gold, while the original case, with a pin on the reverse, is gold filled.

Both the painting and the case are in excellent condition...

Interesting painting of the Southwest, showing Native Americans at a nocturnal religious ceremony or festival such as Penitente, probably in New Mexico, many candles flickering in the scene also populated with processional crosses. The blues of the nocturne dominate the composition, and the yellow crosses and many candles receding into the distance complete this most agreeable painting. The work is signed at bottom right with what appears as "Judith Rossio" or "Romo" or similar...

Large unframed oil on canvas painting of three central figures chatting, other figures in the distance, 24" by 36", painted in a highly impressionist manner, and signed at lower left with the familiar "Buenaventura" signature. The artist is either ALFREDO BUENAVENTURA (1942-1982) or his uncle CESAR BUENAVENTURA (1922-1983). I cannot be certain because their works often look very similar, as do their signatures, and in this case the beginning of the signature is difficult to discern...
