Early 19th century Swiss drawing titled on reverse "paysanne", 7" by 5 1/2" (12 1/4" by 10 1/2" as framed), unsigned. This is a fine drawing by a talented hand. I imagine that the artist would be listed were it signed. Condition is excellent. It is taped at top only to the underlying matting materials.
A pastel on Masonite signed Ricaron Preen? Showing a figure with abstract cornstalk
A strong pencil on paper self portrait in caricature style, 8 1/2" by 7" (14 1/4" by 10 1/4" framed), signed at lower center by the noted German painter and author, JOACHIM RINGELNATZ (1883-1934). The self-mocking profile drawing shows the distinctive nose and hair shock, both featured in a 1983 German 50 Pfennig postage stamp, a canceled example of which has been taped to the glass at lower right by a previous owner of the drawing...
W. T. Smedley, 1858 1920, from the Kennedy galleries a Work Inc. on paper dated 1891 9 x 9 1/2“ frame size 17 x 17“
A watercolor on paper of a castle on the water with a boat and three women walking on the shingle in the foreground, a row boat on the water and the castle in the distance against the sky. John Varley (1778-1842) was an English watercolorist who painted a large quantity of small watercolors including other versions of Conway castle. There are numerous other watercolors that are attributed to him, but probably not by him...
This one is hard to describe....but I will start somewhere. It is an oil on canvas work, unframed, 24" by 24", with no signature on the front, and only "SARAH W." on the overlap giving any possible indication as to who painted this. A green eye within a triangular window in to a human face stares at the viewer, Magritte-like, as the face of a young black child stares from the lower right corner, as a complex pair of intertwined figures at lower left make for arresting and dream-like imagery...
Drawing, I believe in charcoal, 12 3/4" by 18 1/2" inside the matting, framed, but no glass, signed at lower left "M. Moss" and dated "March '93", the subject a large wooden house on a lake surrounded by mountains, small boats tied up in front. I think this is American but I suppose it could also be English; I'm undecided..........though, the framing suggests would make me lean towards American, as the reverse was backed by the typically American wood slats with knotholes...
