Oil on canvas colorful and skillfully painted abstract landscape of the glorious Southwest, 27 1/2" by 36" as framed, signed at lower right "Helen Peeke", and bearing the title "Indian Country" and the original price "150.00" on the stretcher. I have not been able to locate information on the artist but obviously she was a skilled painter who was able to capture the feeling of the Southwest in abstracted form. Condition is excellent and this is wall-ready.

Oil on canvas titled on stretcher "Golden Silence", 28" by 21" (33" by 25" in original vintage frame), signed at lower right and again on the stretcher by California plein air artist EUGENE PIERRE FRANQUINET (1875-1940). This is a fine example of the work of this Belgian-born painter who immigrated to the United States in 1907, and who was in Southern California as early as 1911...

A beautiful circa 1920 impressionist painting of tall pines or cedars in a sun-dappled forest landscape which includes two groups of small figures at center left. The unframed work measures 30" by 24" and is apparently unsigned. Judging from the canvas and stretcher, this is likely the work of a listed American artist. It has been suggested that it was cut down at some point, as the painting extends over the tacking edge...

This is an Armenian name, and the painting was found in Los Angeles, where there is a large Armenian population. Oil on canvas, 13 1/2" by 9 5/8" in its thin old frame, signed at lower center "Ellen B. Farr", the subject her typical signature pepper tree leaves and the distinctive red "berry" seed pods. Farr (1840-1907) is quite appreciated today for her California paintings of pepper trees, still life works of poppies, citrus, native indian baskets, and landscapes...

Oil on canvasboard, 14" by 10" (19 1/4" by 15 1/4" as framed), signed at lower right in red "K. L. Weatherly" and dated there 1940. One of two works by this same artist I acquired at the same time, (the other one also in my shop), this is an impressionistic view of a southern American regional landscape, a swamp or lake with bald cypress and Spanish moss hanging from the trees. Such a scene would normally be encountered in a place like the Louisiana bayous...

Oil on board, (ONE OF TWO BY THE ARTIST IN MY SHOP), 4" by 7 1/2" inside the mat (7 1/2" by 11 1/4" as framed) signed at lower left in green "Six" and dated there "32", the subject the iconic saguaro cactus of the southwestern American desert at sunset. Because that species of cactus grows naturally only in Arizona, we can assume that this is indeed an Arizona scene...

This is a briskly painted work by an artist who was quite active in the Southern California art scene at mid century. An unusually detailed and complete website, evidently created by relatives, gives a complete history of her active life. The artist was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma into a cultured family...

This is a very attractive impressionist work, 18" by 23 3/4" (24" by 29" as framed), unsigned, the subject a line of trees, fading sunlight filtering through them, all in a green and brown palette that seems very Arts and Crafts in feeling. I think the work was likely executed in the 1940's or thereabouts. The stretcher is new, and I am trying to decide if the painting has been lined on a newer canvas...

Small oil on canvas laid on board, 9" by 7" framed, unsigned, the view being an extensive hazy landscape with high snowy peaks in the distance, a spindly tree in the middle ground. I have searched without success for a signature. Likely dates before 1940 and more than likely by a listed artist. Light areas in immediate foreground are probably old losses, which have been in turn varnished over.

Oil on board painting of colorful flowers in a blue ceramic vessel on a tabletop, 20" by 26" (26 1/2" by 32 1/2" as framed), apparently unsigned, the work dating to probably the years around 1930. There is an old crack at upper right as shown, not especially visible to the casual viewer, and I note some flaking and unstable paint in the lower 1/4 of the painting (see bright yellow underpaint showing through----ask for more detailed photos of this).

Oil on canvas painting of famous Morro Rock, the 500 foot high landmark and sentinel that for time immemorial has guarded the harbor at Morro Bay on the coast of central California. Crittenden" listed in Hughes' dictionary of California artists, and she was noted there to have exhibited at the California state fair in 1881. Oil on canvas, 8" by 10" and 1" wide frame, the subject a classic plein air landscape of the low desert. It is signed "Geraldine" at lower right, and on reverse is the inscription "To Dad Happy Anniversary from Mom". The painter was talented but no doubt still an amateur. This is a pleasant decorative painting that is ready to hang on the wall.

Beautifully executed by an unknown but obviously talented artist is this 10" by 8" oil on canvas of a seated woman draped in fabric, against a darker drape background. The work is contemporary.
