Vintage oil on canvas impressionist landscape with rounded low mountains, a country road passing red barns, 25" by 30" (29 1/2" by 34 1/2" framed), signed at lower right corner with what appears as "D Tutis" or "D Totis" or similar. Although the work resembles that of Vermont painter Earl A. Titus (1895-1962), the signature does not correspond with how he signed. So we have a mystery work here...
Oil on canvas nocturne style painting of a wave, 24" by 30" (28" by 34" as framed) by listed California artist ERNEST BROWNING SMITH (1866-1951). Smith is a familiar artist on the plein air scene and I believe his works are presently underrated in the marketplace. The artist had a trademark style; often the scenes in my experience are simplified, devoid of figures, and in a limited color palette. This nocturne is executed in shades of blue...

The 19th century oil on canvas portrait of a gentleman was said to be Thomas Johnston from Concord, NC (Sept. 1850). It was marked on the original canvas (relined) bought in Davie County. It is mounted in a mahogany veneer frame with yellow pine backing. Canvas 29" 24" and the Frame is 38" x 33"...

*One of two works by the artist in my shop**, this is an oil on board painting of what appears to be a wooden fence in a tawny landscape. A large portrait of a woman of obvious wealth and status, 36" by 35", signed "Wells" at lower right on a prop envelope, and dated there 1930, set into a beautiful, unique, valuable 3 3/4" wide frame by the famous framemaker M. (Maurice) Grieve Co. of New York and London (see photo, reverse of frame). An online search did not turn up a "Wells" artist that would obviously fit with this work's subject matter, handling, and period. However we can see that this artist was quite obviously a skilled ...
A Fine Painting by the Listed Oklahoma Artist, Eula L. Grimes. Painting measures about 22" by 26" and is signed lower left. Does have a little wear and a couple of scratches, but shows well. Great Mid Century look.
Oil on canvas of a clapboard cottage by a lake in spring, 18" by 24" with 3" frame, signed at lower left "J.C. FRANCES". I do not see a listing for the artist but he or she was obviously at the very least familiar with the paintings of Henry Pember Smith (1854-1907) and George W. Drew (1875-1968), who painted eerily similar scenes. This painting shows a gambrel roofed cottage with blooming pink blossomed trees and ducks----an idyllic spring idyll in New England or New York state perhaps. Over...
Oil on canvas painting of fruits in a shallow dish, 6" by 12" (10" by 16" nicely framed), signed at lower right by the well-known American artist ALEXANDER BROOK (1898-1980). The subdued colors and careful arrangement suggest familiarity with the great Italian still life master Giorgio Morandi. There is a coldness, a stillness, that is quite monumental. Brook was born in Brooklyn, and studied at the Art Students League from 1914-1918. He married painter Peggy Bacon, and was divorced from her...

Andrew Thomas Schwartz (American, 1867-1942) oil on canvas of a hilly landscape with the morning mist rising off the more distant hills. A few evergreens, probably cedars, sit in the field that appears to be tan with autumn. The only sign of habitation is a low stone wall. A very similar painting though slightly larger was sold at Doyle in New York in 2006 titled, “Clearing, Morning, Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia” and dated 1912. This painting is 20 x 24 inches (51 x 61 cm) with frame 23 x...
