Original oil painting on canvas by J. (Jesse Redwin) Bardin (USA, South Carolina, 1923-1997). Signed lower right. Also signed verso, and inscribed with the artist's address in Paris (60 Rue du Cherche-Midi). With a couple of gallery labels still attached. 10" by 14". unframed original condition.

By the Irish-born artist who came to America as a youngster, WILLIAM J. HENNESSY (1839-1917), this is a charming, intimate little oil on canvas, 6 1/4" by 4 3/4" (11" by 9 1/2" in the 19th century frame), depicting an old man reading by candlelight in an interior, a red cloth in his right hand, the left hand splayed towards a comforting glowing fire in the hearth. Apparently he is alone on a quiet winter's evening, reading the way people had to read before electricity's arrival on the scene...

By the hand of early Plein Air master artist GEORGE KENNEDY BRANDRIFF (1890-1936), a small but pretty and highly impressionistic painting, "San-Bernardino--Mt. Baldy", circa late 1920's. The oil on canvas laid on board measures 10 1/4" by 12" (15" by 16 1/2" in contemporary gold frame). The artist's estate stamp signature appears at lower left; on the reverse is written in old hand "Brandriff/San Bernardino"; and the rectangular David & Sons estate stamp for Brandriff is at left...

She is the daughter of Colonel C. Ballou, who was commandant at Fort George Wright in the 20's, and the painting is a portrait of Kitty, daughter of Colonel and Mrs. Marshall Candee, also of Fort George Wright (where the painting was purchased--at that time it was still Fort Wright College)...
