Niemann Edmund John (I), British, 1813-1876. This oil on canvas is 12" X 18" in a period frame. It is in good condition and will be undergoing a light cleaning. It is signed lower left. This landscape is a very vivid example of Niemann ability to convey the beauty of a spectacular sunset. The detail is excellent on the painting. His paintings go for up to $20,000. The provenanc of the painting is Schilley and Rehs Inc, New York.

The work reminds me a little bit of Braque, Picasso or some of the other 20th century giants who painted modern still life. This painting was evidently owned by a heavy smoker or was in a bar or restaurant where smoke was very much a part of the scene, as it is very heavily yellowed and smells of smoke...
