This is a nicely executed work in watercolor and gouache, depicting an Italianate landscape with majestic central tree, colorful wildflowers at left, and a distant view to the right, signed at extreme right corner "F. Pratesi". I do not see a listing for such a name, (that is, if I am reading it correctly). All photos are taken through the nasty old non-glare type glass, so actual sharpness of the image is even better than shown...

The watercolor scene depicts a tent housekeeping camp on the shore of a body of water, with four figures, all African-American, in the composition, making it therefore quite unusual and scarce. The date of execution might be circa 1880 I feel, given the dress and the primitive camp set-up. The work is an historical record of African-American life in the 19th century. Size is 9 5/8" by 13 1/2" inside the mat, 18 1/4" by 22" in the narrow gold framing...

This is an eastern-looking work though the subject is almost certainly somewhere in Northern California. Yard was born in Rockford, Illinois where he was able to become introduced to art. Still young, after further art study in New York, he moved to London, coming under the tutelage of Royal Academician Sutton Palmer...

Gouache on paper, 16 1/2" by 10 3/4" and 4" on a side mat/frame, signed at lower left in Cyrillic with the possible name "Dreber" or "Dreiber" or "Dreyber", and dated 22 November 1974. This carefully crafted drawing of fuchsia and a tulip-shaped bloom reminds me of early American folk art Americana like Pennsylvania fraktur.......but, this is Russian! Condition is excellent with just slight mottling of a leaf... I think this could be just the artist's handling of the paint...

The vintage work is very faintly painted, almost in the manner of artist Yamada Baske. The tree trunks are the most distinct features, while much of the rest of the scene is filmy, gauzy, ephemeral, foggy. An impressive little work (6 1/2" by 13", 11 3/4" by 18" in metal frame). The scene is poetic and very calming. Hallett was born in Charlestown, Massachusetts and studied in Antwerp and Paris before returning for more training in Boston. I do not see a listing for the name, but, there is a listing for a Los Angeles area artist by the name of Vsevolod Ulianoff (1880-1940), who painted murals like that in the lobby of Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood.
