THREE original watercolors of women in elaborate costuming of the Art Nouveau period, circa 1890's, each signed with the pen name "Japhet", identical sizes and framing, (10 1/4" by 6 1/2", and 13 1/2" by 9 1/2" framed), by the noted French illustrator artist ALEXANDRE JEAN LOUIS JAZET (1814-1897). Jazet was the son of an artist who became a skilled engraver and lithographer, working often in stage design as an illustrator. He often signed with the pen name "Japhet" and "Minon"...

Watercolor and mixed media (ink, gouache) drawing, 8 1/4" by 10 1/4" (13 3/4" by 15 3/4" framed), titled on the reverse framing paper in the hand of the artist "David playing before King Saul", signed there and again at lower left by the well listed New York-California artist IRVING ALEXANDER BLOCK (1910-1986). There is an inscription in Hebrew at lower left near the signature. The subject and handling of the figures evokes Marc Chagall, Mane-Katz and other Jewish artists...

PAIR of framed Paris scenes on board, one showing Notre Dame and the Seine, the other a street scene with a 1930's car and figures, each signed "Montal" at lower right. I would guess these are tourist pieces in the Montmartre painters tradition, probably dating to the 1950's or so. At 13 1/2" by 7 1/2" framed they are identical in size, and they are framed identically as well, though there is wear to each frame, showing as gold areas against a darker background...

Oil on wood panel still life painting of ceramic vessels, plate, kettle, and candlestick, all arranged on a tabletop, apparently unsigned, but on the reverse of the panel is a "Royal Exhibition" 1930 label, and there is a James Bourlet shipping label as well. The work measures 20" by 24" (27 1/2" by 31 1/2" framed). This beautifully impressionistic work is likely by a listed artist but I am stymied by the lack of a signature...

Watercolor of a classic English church, the Holy Trinity Church, in the park-like autumnal setting of world-famous Stratford-upon-Avon, the home of everything Shakespeare, of course. The final resting places of Shakespeare and Ann Hathaway are actually in this church. The water which appears as a small pond or lake is the River Avon. This piece measures 10 1/4" by 14 3/8 " (16 3/4" by 21" nicely framed), and is signed at lower left "R. W. Sayle", who was a local painter there...

This is a beautiful work by a well listed painter who was born in Russia and spent much time in the Pittsburgh area, as well as New York, before settling in Southern California later in life. Shulgold's biography tells of stints as a watchmaker and worker in a bottling plant, before yielding to the desire to create art...

Many artists in the 19 century travel to exotic Italy in the 1880s and 1870s as the John Singer Sargent. Cormens was one of those Artist. This work is of a Neapolitan beauty wearing gold jewelry possibly by the Italian craftsman Fortunato Pio Castellani. Oil on canvas painting, unsigned, 24" by 12", in pinkish wood strip framing. The colors of the painting could be described as creamy light pink with some green. The work might have some age as it appears that "12-81" is written on the stretcher, possibly a date; and olden-days "$2.03" price is stamped on inside of the frame. There is a three-dimensional relief in places, where the artist spread the paint. No varnish, dull surface.

A fine oil on canvas by Leo Jansen (American 1930-1980) whose career is best noted for his nudes and the many paintings of Playmates of the Month for Playboy magazine during the 1960s and 70s. His reputation earned many commissions from then-reigning stars such as Raquel Welch and Stephanie Powers.

Small oil on board painting of houses at left, feathery trees occupying the right hand side of the composition, unsigned, 8" by 11 1/2" (11 1/2" by 15" in mid 20th century frame). The painting reminds one of the Dutch Old Masters though it was very likely executed in the 19th century, perhaps in England. It shows evidence of its age, with soiling, a missing fleck at right center (the white spot) and some smallish scrapes in sky at upper left...
