Max Kassler, American 1905–1992 was an abstract Artist known for some of the most unusual experimental work based on the human figure He was an early student of the Picasso school of painting. This work culminated his idea of abstraction in space. This is part of the collection we have at the gallery. Automatic drawing was pioneered by the English artist Austin Osman Spare who wrote a chapter, Automatic Drawing as a Means to Art, in his book, The Book of Pleasure (1913)

A fine, highly finished and detailed watercolor painting of a seated lady on a patio, her large lute at her side. The setting is possibly a castle, as a tower in the background suggests. The artist signed at lower right and dated the work 1875. It measures 13 1/2" by 9 1/4" (16 1/2" by 12 1/4" in its attractive circa 1930's framing (note the old Jordan Marsh department store label from Boston on reverse--could have been purchased or framed there). Unsigned watercolor landscape painting, late 19th century American origin, the subject a chilly shoreline including snow-covered shacks, two figures, and a small overturned boat in winter storage, measuring 11" by 21" inside the mat (16" by 25" as framed). DESCRIPTION: Oil on canvas painting of a Mexican pueblo (or village) by artist R. M. Domez. The multi-story adobe structures with slanted roofs are seen in the escaping light of an approaching storm. Frame is carved wood and gilt; dating from the first half of the 20th C. and in excellent condition. DIMENSIONS: Sight: 23 1/2" wide (59.6 cm) x 18 3/4" high (47.6 cm). In the frame: 29" wide (73.7 cm) x 24 1/2" high (62.2).

This is a really pretty watercolor on heavy watercolor paper by an obvious talent, 14" by 20" (22 1/2" by 28 1/4" as framed), the subject picturesque boats tied up along the banks of an idyllic stretch of river, a boathouse at left and a few figures completing the impressionist composition. The work's varieties of impressionistic blues are quite lovely, and there is simply excellent handling of color and light. The only fault, really, is that the artist did not sign the piece...
