A well executed watercolor and gouache on paper titled on the back, with an indecipherable monogram and the date in the lower left. Brooks Pettus (1918-2003) was a noted western American artist who passed away in Kennewick, Washington, leaving behind a large body of work in watercolor and oil that only recently appeared on the market. Pettus earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of New Mexico, and spent time in Albuquerque and Taos in the early 1940's. A portrait miniature, on natural wafer, of a young woman with a mien that might be described as a remembrance of things past. The sitter is wearing a mauve gown, a white fichu, and a tortoiseshell comb in her hair.

  The painting is in a 4 1/2" by 4 1/2" ebonized wood frame with a bronze liner, with a sight size diameter of 2 1/4". Both the frame and the painting are in excellent condition.

This sweet genre painting of a shepherdess with her flock reflects the theme of the child-of-nature, a sensibility embraced by Victorians during the 19th century. The figure’s youth and comely face convey innocence, while her steadfast pose next to the goldenrod suggests that she is at ease in her environment.

Watercolor on paper, unframed, 9" by 11 3/4", signed at lower right in pencil, and signed again and apparently titled on the reverse, by the noted, long-lived American artist, THERESA FERBER BERNSTEIN (1890-2002). The watercolor likely dates to about the middle years of the 20th century, I would guess. Writing on the reverse seems to say "Israel/Yarkon River". A fine portrait miniature of a handsome gentleman painted on natural wafer by Henry Inman. The sitter is wearing a black jacket and stock, and a white waistcoat, shirt, and collar.
