Arthur Briscoe, British, 1893-1963, "Oyster Dreckers," etching, plate measures 6 1/2 x 10 inches on 8 1/2 x 11 1/4 inch laid paper. C. 1924. Catalog: Hurst 87. Edition of 75. The scene depicts some oyster dredgers on Buzzon (or Besom) Creek, near Briscoe's home in Colchester. The oyster industry there is now endangered, but Briscoe has captured it well. A woodblock print on hand-made paper, the subject a female nude, as originally published in 1921 in the French language literary and art magazine Les Cahiers d'Aujourd'hui. According to information affixed to the backing, this is "original work done on hand laid paper", which was "string-tied" into the hand-bound booklet. CARL HOFER (1878-1955) is today considered a German Expressionist; his finest paintings have exceeded $500,000 at auctions...

Nicolas Mignard, French, 1606-1668, "Odysseus and Hermes Before Circe". Etching by Nicolas Mignard after the frescoes of Annibale Carracci depicting scenes from Homer's Odyssey. Plate size 10 1/4 x 17 3/4, published by Pierre Mariette in 1637, with lettering in Latin below the image. Printed on a very early watermarked laid type paper.

A charming little etching "Cape Ann Near Gloucester", so titled at bottom center, signed in the plate at lower right with the signature of listed American artist LOUIS KINNEY HARLOW (1850-1913). At lower left in smaller type is "Genuine Engraved Etching". The print likely dates to about the 1890's or 1900. Harlow was born in Massachusetts and became known as a prolific watercolorist in New England, producing coastals, landscapes, and images of familiar places...

Augustus John 1878-1961 Welsh This is a very scarce etching by Welsh artist Augustus John. The subject is a Portrait of Benjamin Evans, Benjamin Evans is thought to have been etched during Augustus John’s stay in Liverpool, where he taught at the University from 1901-1902. Joseph Pennell 1857-1926 American This is an original pencil signed lithograph by American artist Joseph Pennell. He traveled down to Panama in 1912 to record the building of the Canal. He created a series of images from that trip. This image is titled Cranes at Miraflores Lock, Panama, Printed in an edition of only 100. This image measures 22 1/4X16 3/4 inches on a Fabiano watermarked, laid type paper. Sheet size is 25 1/2X 20 1/2 inches.

This is a wood engraving print titled "Les Visages", by the important French artist GEORGES ROUAULT (1871-1958). The print measures 7" by 8 3/4" inside the mat (13 3/4" by 15 1/2" as framed). I believe that this is from the edition published at a later date (circa 1960's) by the Collectors' Guild of New York; the print is dated in the plate 1927, and signed in the plate at lower right. The condition is very good with even very light toning of the paper...

Three fine engravings of Mount Vernon, Monticello, and Independence Hall, nicely mounted and framed together vertically. The framed piece measures 16 1/2" by 11". These appear to be the same images that appear on US currency, and the very high quality of the printing (intaglio?) is similar. One wonders if these have been produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, either as printing proofs, or perhaps as official souvenirs to be sold in a gift shop setting.
