In 1981 Haku Maki suddenly produced a modest series of prints with a vinyl (old leather)-like background. I have already written about several of these in my Research Note 8. Now I present another: a striking orange red persimmon with leaves tipped with a special Japanese lacquer and the background in vinyl. This is 81-31 and it is 175/190.

The kanji for Peach appears in the uppper right of the print. 17 of 24 Haku Maki was one of the grand masters of the Sosaku-hanga print movement. Maki Haku (1924-2000) is the artistic name of Maejima Tadaaki, who was born in Ibaraki Prefecture. He had no formal art training, but was guided by the s¨­saku hanga leading artist Onchi Ko­shiro 1891-1955). Maki Haku is best known for his abstract-calligrapic prints...

This is a rather early landscape etching in brown ink, signed at lower right in pencil by the renowned southwestern artist MICHAEL B. COLEMAN (1946-). The work is numbered 20/20 at lower left margin. Judging from the auction record, which shows that oils have exceeded $50,000, the number of etchings by Coleman's hand is apparently rather limited. This one probably dates to early in his career, perhaps the late 1970's or early 1980's. Coleman was born in Utah and still lives there...

A wonder lithograph work signed by the artist measuring 30x24 inches. who was born in 1921. He moved to France early in his life. He is one of the most sought after Vietnamese artist today.

Over the course of his print-making life, Haku Maki often depicted the kanji for Man, Woman, and Child. This is a “man” from 1979; it measures 9.5in W x 10.75in H and numbers 42 of a total edition of 204.

Poem 71-71 is a Maki depiction of 子 Child and is one of those large red kanji on a black background that Daniel Tretiak valled a Big Red. This one measures 12in W by 17.5in H and is no.13 of an edition of 153. It is in excellent condition.

Haku Maki was a Japanese print master of the late 20th century. His prints at the time this one was published were strong on the use of kanji and abstract designs, as shown here. In this case; the design is abstract, it shows archaic images which we are trying to understand. The print is large, well designed and carried off...
