Print size: 5.25” x 7.5”

Departing from 874 AD, the German text develops the context of the 5th Council of Constantinople, held 879/880 AD – an initiative of Pope Johannes VIII to appease the Byzantines and obtain their aid against the Saracen threat in Italy.
The hand-colored woodcut of the council shows the pope and a large group of clergy under the blessing of the Holy Spirit, who is depicted as a dove.
On the right, woodcuts of contemporary popes Johannes VIII, Martinus II, Hadrianus III and Stephanu...
Done in 1992, Poem 5 is a very stylized take on the kanji for woman女. Maki did many, many versions of woman. All of them are interesting, most of them striking. To me, this dramatic rendering strays the furthest from the actual character. Daniel Tretiak called this a Square Woman. This was done using the silkscreen process; it is not an embossed woodblock print. It measures 11.5in x 11.5 in.
A set of FOUR framed circa 1836 engravings of exotic Australian birds, with hand coloring, by EDWARD LEAR (1812-1888). Lear was an English artist, illustrator, author, and poet, renowned today primarily for his literary nonsense, in poetry and prose, and especially his limericks, a form that he popularized. As a highly talented watercolorist, and a widely traveled figure, for his day, he created now-prized works featuring the Mediterranean region and the Holy Land...
Max Slevogt, German, 1868-1932, drypoint etching, "Two Tigers", image size: 4 1/8 x 5 1/2 inches, 1913, edition of 35, pencil signed. From "10 Radierte Tierstudien von Max Slevogt."
Large folio size print, sheet measuring 18 1/4" by 24 1/2" inside the mat, 27 1/4" by 33 1/2" as framed, titled at bottom. This image was produced by Currier in 1868, but I believe this example to be a high quality hand colored RESTRIKE of a later date. It's a great image, with grandparents in their snug Victorian 1860's New England interior, a roaring fire and their granddaughter indicating the other seasons of life. The print is in excellent fresh condition; allow for reflections in glass...
