This is a dramatic rendering of the Chinese character for stone 石 by the Japanese artist Haku Maki. It's a large print, a Big Green, in the words of Daniel Ttretiak, who called Maki's large red depictions of characters (kanji) Big Reds. Please contact ldtnbj@gmail.com

This Maki Big Red has the Kanji (Chinese character) for Flower as its theme. The Flower is red and strong; it is set off by a black Sun to the right. A blue tear balances the sun on the left. Maki’s seal in red ink paste, is below the tear, also at the left. Although Maki himself printed this image, the ink looks as if it was layered on by hand. Proportion 10 is an exciting Maki offering—white kanji on bright yellow. This use of yellow was fairly rare in Maki’s work. It is a square print—13.625 sq inches—in excellent condition. A ray of sunshine in any collection, on any wall.

Collection 30 is one of the many striking prints of ceramics that fascinated Maki from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. Maki’s ceramic prints conveyed the “feel” of the bowls or cups or wine vessels—a sense of how it would feel if touched was imparted to the viewer through his ability to suggest texture in his prints...

In the 1960s, Haku Maki was beginning his career as a modern print maker. He used ersatz titles for different series of prints: Cell, Animal Song for the Zodiac, Proportion, Work, Figure,and Emanation. Flower Song was another. Here we show Flower Song 6, which I have just acquired, and Flower Song 3 which I have owned for a long time The others are not noteworthy. This one measures 13 x 17in/48 x 34cm.

Poem 68-40—strongly related to Poem 69-13 which is posted below on this site—is an old embossed print. Created in 1968, a year before its “cousin,” it is similarly in excellent condition. Poem 68-40 measures 11 3/8in W x 15in H and is number 29 of an edition of 72.

In the period 1966-67, Haku Maki did two large series with Song as the theme. There was Flower Song, a series of 10 prints. And there was Animal Song which was Maki’s Asian Zodiac series, with 12 images. It was also a small series with small editions--50 in the case of Animal Song (released in Kyoto, so very hard to find: only one friend has the full set), I do not know who has the full set of Flower Song. Equally rare is Moon Song...

This colorful print is an early Maki embossed print. It is a quite small print done in a very low run. Only 30 copies were made. Maki started doing 50 copies by 1962. Earlier he may have lacked the confidence to do runs of that size so he did 30 as shown here The three red suns are dramatic, The print is signed in white ink, an early Maki touch.
