During the 1970s, Haku Maki liked occasionally to do haniwa, depictions of terracotta figures that were funerary objects used during the 3rd to 6th centuries in Japan. This one—71-2—is a face rather than a complete figure. Created in 1971, the print is 50 of an edition of 151. It measures 5.75in x 8.5in. The print is in very good condition, with faint tape residue on the two top corners of the back, with no impact on the face.

The unframed print measures 11" by 8 1/4" inside an old gray mat. The artist, BENJAMIN MESSICK (1891-1981) was born in the Missouri Ozarks and served in Europe in World War I. He showed early artistic talent. After his return he was in California, studying at Chouinard in Los Angeles, and winning scholarships and awards...

It was printed in Japan in the mid-70s, just as Maki was beginning to leave the production of prints with kanji as the main theme and start doing then with Ceramics, mainly in the Collection series. Etching on paper, the sheet 6 3/4" by 9", 12 1/4" by 14 1/2" framed, the subject a group of children floating playfully on a makeshift raft, pencil signed at lower right by noted English artist and illustrator, author and poet EILEEN SOPER (1905-1990). The work is titled, I believe, "Voyage of Discovery". Eileen was the daughter of artist George Soper. By 1920 she had submitted work to the Print Makers of California, and it was chosen for exhibition...
