This is an appealing little sketch, oil on board of a landscape with a line of trees, a tawny field, a few structures and an extensive view beyond, unsigned, circa 1940's or 1950's. It is obviously by a talented artist who failed to sign his or her name. Perhaps it is a study for a more finished painting to come. Measuring 12" by 16", it should be easy to find a (common, "standard size") suitable frame. Condition is good save for a stubbed, worn corner at upper extreme right, as shown.

A charming vintage miniature pair of folk art paintings c1950s. This pair of miniature scenic view oil paintings depicts scenes the Gravenhurst, Ontario area. These 4-3/4" x 3-3/4" sight size paintings come in white painted 6" x 5" frames, and each was painted by May House. One shows "Muskoka Bay from Green Acres, W. Gravenhurst" and the other "Montgomery's Point + Gateway Hotel, from W. Gravenhurst". The kosher hotel (1949-1961) catered to Jewish vacationers from Toronto...

Etching, 4 3/4" by 6 5/8" inside the mat, 10" by 12 1/2" in simple black strip frame, titled in pencil at left margin "A Bermuda Lane" and signed in margin in pencil at lower right by artist RAY ALLEN. I do not see a listing for an artist of this name. The work likely dates to about the 1950's I would think, and is probably still in its original frame. The impression is strong, with a distinct plate mark. Disregard false yellow colors in some of the photos, which are an effect of the camera...

Watercolor painting of a harbor, probably Maine, signed at lower right corner by artist M. Matheson and titled in pencil on the reverse, appropriately, "Quiet Harbor" (with original $35.00 price). The work, on heavy watercolor paper, measures 15 1/2" by 22 1/2". It having slid down under the mat due to the old tape losing its grip, I removed this from the mat and frame, which are (possibly) available at no extra charge. The fairly ordinary frame measures 22 1/2" by 27 1/2"...

This was once a beautiful late 1950's period example of Italian abstract art, executed by the listed artist, from Venice, Italy, GIOVANNI GIULIANI (1893-1965). Unfortunately due to careless storage by one or many owners (it was exposed to moisture), combined with the artist's choice of materials, it is now a restorer's special, worthy of conservation. One of three works in my shop by the same artist, F. KENWOOD GILES (1899/1900-1972), is this watercolor on paper painting, 14" by 19 1/2" inside the mat, 20 1/2" by 26 1/2" as framed, the subject several pink-walled, white-roofed island homes on a bluff overlooking the sea, flowering shrubs and bushes completing the happy scene. The paintings are not dated, but I believe they would have been created in the 1950's. Giles was a versatile English artist who lived in Bermuda from 1950 onward...

Oil on canvasboard painting of a green coast, a stand of foreground trees in late autumn colors giving fine depth to the scene. The artist did not sign the work, which likely dates to the 1950's judging from frame and board. There is a small area of flaked paint in the trunk of the most prominent tree. Overall a nicely done work that would be improved with a gold frame. Measurements are 20" by 24" and 26" by 30" framed.

This is a small etching (6 1/2" by 4 1/2", 12 1/4" by 10 1/4" in metal frame with black mat) by the noted California artist HARRIET GENE ROUDEBUSH (1908-1998), titled at lower left "Flower Stand" and pencil signed at lower right by the artist. Roudebush was born in Portland, Oregon and moved to Sacramento as a youth. An old watercolor painting titled at lower left "Atitlan Guatemala", signed at lower right by artist "M. Moody". This may be a listed watercolor artist by the name of Marion Moody but that cannot be confirmed. The work is well handled, the old architecture and five foreground figures nicely painted. Lake Atitlan is a famous scenic lake in central Guatemala, ringed by volcanic peaks and popular with tourists to this day. The painting measures 9 3/4" by 13" (13" by 17" framed).
