Antique circa 1890's oil on canvas painting of a thatch roof dwelling in a forest scene, 24"by 16", (30" by 22 1/2" in mid century frame), unsigned. This work was acquired at the same time and place as two others that are likely by the same American unknown artist---none signed. The brushwork is clearly by a talented and likely "listed" hand, but the lack of a signature frustrates efforts to identify that hand. Condition is excellent; frame though has crumbling of the left edge, due to age...

Etching with color possibly hand-applied, 5 1/4" by 5 5/8" inside the inner gold fillet, 11 1/2" by 10 7/8" as framed, unsigned, by important French 20th century artist MARIE LAURENCIN (1885-1956). From having checked the 1981 catalog raisonne by Daniel Marchesseau, I have determined that the most official title of this work is "Fillette aux Yeux Vertes" ("Young Girl with Green Eyes", although a number of other titles are in common usage for this unusually popular print)...

A circa 1925 ORIGINAL PAINTING, not a print, with title "Oriental Antiques", no signature, but with old Massachusetts Normal Art School partial label on reverse, the piece measuring 22 3/4" by 16 3/4 in its original charming period blue and reddish-painted framing. The word "COELEBS" at bottom does not seem to pertain to anything. This may be a work by art students training in the use of watercolor and gouache. It was found in a Laguna Beach fine estate...

A small landscape painting on canvas, (actually a very nice size for a small wall, 12" by 16", and 15" by 19" framed), signed at lower right by listed artist ANTON GUTKNECHT (1907-1988). We see a dirt road winding around the edge of a wooded area, a European village and small church seen in the far distance. Gutknecht was born in Dusseldorf and studied art in that German city, as well as Munich and Hamburg. For a time he taught at the Royal Academy in Vienna...

I have searched online under this name and similar spellings and strangely cannot seem to come up with a listed artist corresponding to the name. Listed or not, the artist knew how to paint...

A late 19th century etching of a young woman, measuring 5 3/4" by 4" inside the mat, the laid paper sheet 10" by 7 1/4", and 19 1/4" by 15 1/2" nicely framed, with a monogram in the plate at right center and an illegible pencil signature at lower right that appears to begin with "J". As the work somewhat resembles some portrait etchings by the famous artist Whistler, and the monogram almost appears as an early Whistlerian "butterfly" before it evolved, I thought the work possibly by Whistler...

I was able to figure out the authorship due to there being a companion piece on my site, also a still life and purchased at the same time as this one; that piece is not signed on the front but on the reverse in pencil is "Vinnie Gjere"...

THREE hand colored French 19th century prints featuring early-day Japanese soldiers, each 9 1/4" by 6 3/8" inside the faded old violet mats, to which each is simply taped at top edge. The prints are unframed. Two have a dark foxing mark, and all are of sufficient age to have acquired the signs of age---paper toning, slight handling creases and so forth. Large contemporary Haitian painting with an enormous amount of detail and pleasing color, 31 1/2" by 23 1/2" (37 1/2" by 29" in shiny black plastic framing), signed at lower right by artist Felden Lafleur. Take some time to study the images, filled with amazing intricacies that must have taken days to create. The work is in excellent, unusually fresh condition; frame has some wear.

For your Colorado ski cabin, a contemporary (maybe as early as the 1970's) watercolor and gouache painting, unsigned, featuring objects familiar to anyone who has gone skiing in the mountains: a packet of Kleenex for the runny noses, mittens/gloves, down jacket, lift ticket and ski trail map, tire chains, and rubber clasp to hold the skis together when walking back to the car.
