Early twentieth century impressionist painting of one of New Orleans' famous courtyard subjects, 9 1/4" by 7" as framed, signed at lower right corner "Don Juan". While an interesting name to be sure, I have not been able to find a listed artist corresponding to it. The work though is by an obviously trained and talented hand. The vintage frame makes all in all for a very satisfying little painting sure to please the New Orleans fan. The surface is soiled evenly, consistent with age...

I am not familiar with the apparently unlisted artist might be but he or she was talented and possibly familiar with the San Francisco School/California School, Northern California School of art---artists like David Park, Nathan Oliveira, Elmer Bischoff and Manuel Neri. From a high end Southern California estate, a fine oil on canvas laid down on Masonite, 23" by 18 3/4" (27 1/2" by 23 1/2" in late 20th century frame), apparently unsigned, in the style of the renowned 17th century Dutch artists such as Jan de Heem. The details of the various types of flowers are impressive, as are those of the snails, the moth, and the water droplets on the leaves. The more one studies this the more one sees...

Large oil on canvas, 30" by 40" (34" by 44" framed), unsigned, in its vintage original frame, the subject a desert track through sandy scrub, distant purplish mountains filling the background. Though unsigned, the heavily impastoed, impressionistic style and the scene and colors used are unquestionably the work of JAMES MERRIAM (1880-1951). Merriam was born in Canada and was studying in Detroit, before arriving in Southern California...

A fine painting of a youth, signed and dated "P. Jean 1789" on the right side. The sitter is dressed in a red jacket with a white ruff. The reverse of the gold case has interwoven plaits of hair under glass.

There are no condition issues with the painting or the case. The discoloration along the top of the painting is light reflection. The size is 2" by 1 1/2".

A lovely highly impressionist oil on board painting of coffee pots and creamers on a table, apparently unsigned, and of vintage age, possibly 1930's or 1940's I believe. The work measures 14 1/2" by 15 1/4" (18" by 18 1/2" framed). On the reverse of the old board is written in old hand in pencil what appears as "Robert Swasey/327 Spring St./Portland Maine". I have looked for the name Robert Swasey in standard art search sites and have not located a known recognized painter by this name...

So, this is offered as a nice decorative work showing a peaceful deep fjord probably on the west coast of Norway, a small structure at right.
