Oil on masonite panel painting of the desert, 12" by 9", signed in capital letters at lower left by listed southwestern artist BILL SHADDIX (1931-). The presence of the iconic saguaro cactus places the scene as east of the Colorado River, therefore in Arizona. Shaddix was born in Oklahoma during the Dust Bowl, and emigrated to California by the early 1940's with his family. A deputy sheriff in Orange County by 1956, he began to paint, and eventually turned full time to his fine art...

Unsigned acrylic/oil portrait of a woman worker acquired from a Hong Kong auction. I am assuming this was painted while China and Russia were still friends so would date this pre 1960. Good example of Socialist Realism (girl meets tractor) kitsch, W: 35cm/13.8in and H: 45.cm/17.8in.

Vintage oil on panel painting of the coastline at Santa Monica in Southern California, 7" by 9" framed, signed at lower right "K. Latour". Written on an old label on the reverse is "Scene looking right from Palisades at Santa Monica Calif./remember?". The painting likely dates to about the 1940's or early 1950's. Ready to hang on your small empty wall. The vintage frame has slight corner separation and wear at upper left.

A rare print by surrealist print maker Ozaku Seishi, professor emeritus from Tama Art University. He is best known for small edition prints, usually up to 30 copies, limitless experimentation with printing techniques and surrealist, often graphic imagery resembling distorted reality ¬neither quite explicit nor quite horror, but rendering a fairly dark version of dreams. This aquatint is from a 1974 portfolio titled “World of Children” (子どもの世界), which consisted of 30 aquatints...

The work to the unaided eye appears to be an original drawing but magnification reveals the tell-tale clues to the silkscreen process. The black paper sheet measures 27 1/2" by 21 1/2" and is unframed (there is 1/8" Plexi sheet that protects it)...

Small oil on canvas laid on board painting of a man in traditional outfit with distinctive hat. The mid 20th century work is signed illegibly at lower left corner. This would appear to be from Ecuador, or if not there, another Andean nation such as Peru or Bolivia. Measurements are 4" by 3 1/2" (7 1/2" by 7 1/4" as framed, with blue velvet liner). An interesting addition to a small wall or nook.

A contemporary oil on canvasboard painting, 16" by 20", 19 1/2" by 23 1/2" as framed, the subject an intimate little harbor no doubt in coastal Maine, with a lobsterman's shack and traps stacked on the deck, and his trap-identifying floats hanging on the side of the structure. The talented amateur artist "Paula" signed at lower right and dated the work '98. The work has accumulated a little light soiling and two small abraded areas, as shown.

Oil on canvasboard painting of a young girl, in the style of Margaret Keane and the "Big Eyed School" of the period, 24" by 18", unframed. The work is signed, charmingly, at lower right "Grandpa Friedman" and is dated there "64". The board is curved---a bit concave, or convex, as you might put it---but otherwise the painting is in good condition. A nice addition to your mid century Retro collection.

ONE OF A NUMBER BY THE ARTIST IN MY SHOP**This is a small etching (the sheet 4 7/8" by 6 1/2" inside the reddish mat, 9 1/2" by 11" framed), pencil signed at lower right by the noted California artist HARRIET GENE ROUDEBUSH (1908-1998), and titled at lower left margin "Cypress Trees at the Beach". The scene is dominated by an old, impressive coast cypress tree with lots of character, its sheltering branches framing more distant offshore rock and a church with twin steeples...

Photograph titled in the negative at lower left "Douglas and Juneau Alaska view from Mt. Jumbo", signed again in the negative at bottom center by "E. Andrews photo". The photo measures 11 1/4" by 18 5/8" inside the mat and 19 1/2" by 26" framed. According to information taken from the internet, the photographer, ED ANDREWS, was born in Norway in 1872, arriving in Douglas, Alaska in 1897 as a young man during the Klondike gold rush years. He worked as a clerk in the Treadwell Store...

An oil on canvas painting of white flowers in a glass vase on a table top, two small porcelain vessels nearby, the work signed at lower right by artist Minerva Smithers. On the stretcher in pencil is written "Matilija Poppy" and then the artist again wrote her name in longhand. A google search shows a Minerva Smithers born in 1877 in Wisconsin, the woman's residence given in the 1940 census as Hawthorne, in Southern California (very near where this was found)...

He also executed oils and acrylics in the course of a long career. This work, titled at lower left in pencil "Love & Peace" and numbered there 31/200 examples, is signed in pencil at lower right. The print measures 20 1/4" by 14 3/4" inside the mat (32" by 23" as framed)...

A pair of old prints in color---I believe, some sort of lithography process similar to chromolithography in feeling, one featuring the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, the other the Second Empire "Pont au Change" bridge connecting the Ile de la Cite to the Rive Droite. The current bridge was rebuilt between 1856 and 1860 and therefore bears the letter N, the imperial insignia of Napoleon III. It is composed of three 31 meter long arches and is 30 meters wide...

Oil on canvas painting of a tabby cat, 7" by 5" (12" by 10" framed), circa 1970 to 1980 judging from the framing, signed lower right "Jody". The artist was certainly talented; the likeness of the cat to reality is well above average. Condition is excellent. Needs to be nailed more tightly into frame.

For the collector of Californiana, a scarce early 20th century hand-tinted photograph of the arches at old Mission San Juan Capistrano in Orange County, California, signed in the margin in pencil at lower right and titled at lower left margin "San Juan Capistrano" by noted, listed photographer JOHN M. GARRISON (1881-1964). The classic view of the arcaded breezeway at the beloved mission, still a tourist attraction today, is as California as can be...
