This beautiful chawan (tea bowl) is a Raku ware made by famous Kyuraku Kimura. It was made about 40-50 years ago. The seal of Raku is stamped on the bottom.

It comes with its originally signed and sealed wooden box and an appraisal of the Daitoku-ji Temple, Kyoto. This temple is very famous for its knowledge about chanoyu (Japanese tea ceremony). Chinese calligraphy painting of a famous poem "Li Bai" originally written in the Tang Dynasty. This poem has been rewritten by artist Zhongshan in Autumn of ??22 in Nanjing. Approximate translation of the poem is as follows: "The sun shining (white), the furnace being prepared and the smoke spreading throughout. The waterfall bubbling in front of the river and flowing (with drops of water splashing)..." Size of paper: 53" high x 18 1/4" wide...

Shamanic mask, with minimalist features, probably representing a demon. Wood, with fine dark brown glossy patina. Nepal, mid 20th century. Height: 28 cm. The mask is nicely mounted on a custom stand. Very good condition.

The artist's red seal is at the lower right with the pencil-signature below. Paper: 15 3/8" x 10 1/4" (image: 14 1/2" x 9 1/2"). Very good overall condition with slight waviness to the paper.

Wonderful hand-shaped Shino Chawan by great To-en Miyamura, made around 1935, enclosed in its origninally signed and sealed wooden box. Smooth and very aesthetic Shino glaze and a true wabi-sabi aura.

No chips or cracks. Impressive feeling holding this big tea bowl in your hands.

The original 14,000 yen price is in pencil on the back lower right edge.

Located at the foot of an active volcano, the Ougaku kiln specializes in a type of pottery know as Sakurajima-yaki. The kiln is headed by Hashino Midori and run entirely by female potters who strive to infuse each piece they produce with the “energy” of the surrounding environment. Pieces such as the one featured here are made from volcanic ash and mineral-rich onsen spring water giving them a unique luster that is difficult to reproduce...

This lovely white Hagi chawan rests firmly on a wari kodai or “split foot.” The crackled milky glaze varies in consistency across the curves and contours of the bowl with some areas tending towards a faint brown, adding an interesting dimension to the landscape.
