Old Hakoseko (Japanese tissue holder or purse) for times when women wear formal kimono. They are placed in the chest area with the chains of the kanzashi hair ornaments hanging from the obi belt. The beautiful embroidery work (very delicate) on this hakoseko did not show up in the photos. The red color is a much softer tone; this is truely an elegant piece. Netsuke of standing Jurojin holding a turtle on his hand. Jurojin is one of 7 Gods of Good Fortune, that of longevity, and the turtle - one of his usual companions - is also associated with longevity. The netsuke is essentially a wish for long life. Very nicely carved, great level of detail and perfectly captured facial expression, expert staining. Signed SEIGYOKU on the back - for a discussion of the artist see CONTEMPORARY NETSUKE by Miriam Kinsey, p. 226. Height 1 7/8 inches.

An earthenware terracotta bottle vase and stopper. The vase is decorated with transfer printed "famille rose" enamels depicting flowers birds and marine life. This item was made by Watcombe pottery, Torquay, which was operational from 1869 to 1883. The base carries the impressed date mark for October 1878. Condition - very good - there is a small chip to the footrim (please view enlargements) and a tiny chip to the underside of the cover; there are also minor losses to the enamels...

This is Kazri-Mino of an vintage folk handicraft used in the Tohoku district. This is made of the epidermis of the tree of Shina and the seaweed which were completely dried. As for this, the decoration around the neck is made in Koyori-Paper. This is an item of the 20th century. This does not have stain damage. Size 127cm x 44cm (50 "x 17.3")
