Japanese vase of convex shape, Totai decoration of a bird and a butterfly among leaves and berry bushes. The motif created by thin metal threads is filled in with colored lacquer and polished. The brown lacquer background is carved as to resemble tree bark (totai). This complicated technique for decoration on porcelain was in use in Japan in the 1920’s and 30’s.The base with old paper label, indistinct letters in blue and the word “Lacquer”. Fire lighting implement consisting of a piece of iron, pieces of fabric and a fragment of flint stone, the whole set being contained in a rattan box. This implement belonged formerly to a member of a tribe located in Palawan Island, South West of the Philipino Archipelago. Such tribe, like a few others in this island, has in some aspects remained in the Stone Age. It was put under the protection of the Philipino Government some 40 years ago. This Victorian locket is European in origin. One side has enamel in black and blue, on top of an ornate engraving. The other side is deeply engraved with a different pattern. It measures 1 1/8" long x 3/4" wide. Ca. 1880

9 Chinese carved hardstone animal figures, including 4 elephants, one penguin, a dog, what seems to be a seal or a dog, a bear and a rabbit. All carved from hardstone in different colors. Size: Measurements varies from penguin with the height of 2 3/8 inches the the smallest one, elephant with the height of 1 3/8 inches. Condition Report: All figures are in the good condition with the exception of damage to the Penguin foot and seal's foot.
