Taisho period (1920s) Japanese pottery Bizen ware chaire (tea caddy for storing powdered green tea used in tea ceremony) with tapering body. Wonderful free potting, excellent play of colors on the surface, beautiful patina, very nice sandy particles in clay, impressed mark of the potter on the bottom. Later resin lid lined with silvery leaf paper on the inside. Comes with very well made shifuku (silk brocade storage bag). Great piece in excellent condition. Height with cover 3 inches.

Rather unusual late Taisho - early Showa (1920s) Japanese boxwood scoop for loose tea, its handle carved as the head of angry Daruma, Patriarch of Zen Buddhism. Beautifully carved, nice patina, signed on the front with 3 characters that appear to read CHUKOBI. It is very unusual to see signed tea scoop. Length 3 inches.

Vintage Japanese wooden sago (tea scoop) carved in a shape of an eggplant. That kind of tea scoop is used for sencha - a type of Japanese green tea which is prepared by infusing the processed whole tea leaves in hot water. Cleverly and beautifully carved (see the stippling on the leaves by the stem) out of softwood, very pleasant to hold, in great condition. Length 4 7/8 inches.

Late Meiji (1900s) Japanese ceramic chawan (tea bowl) for tea ceremony decorated with what appears to be dumbbell shaped percussion instruments. Dark brown stoneware body, beautiful Satsuma type glaze with wonderful fine crackling, multicolored enamels with gold. Excellent free potting, wonderful sense of energy to the piece, great object in Japanese taste, in perfect condition. Stamped with a potter’s seal in unglazed area by the foot. Diameter 3 1/2 inches, height 3 1/2 inches.

Late 19th to early 20th century Japanese tea ceremony short hibashi (metal chopsticks for handling charcoal in hibachi brazier) with brass working part and bronze handle inlaid with shakudo and silver keyfret design, and with flower finials. These hibashi are for use in the summer time (winter ones have handle parts covered in wood). Finely made, wonderful quality inlays. Beautiful patina, seem to have never been used, very pleasant to hold. Come with original holder made out of banana leaf...

Buff colored stoneware body with free bulbous body bearing the marks of potter’s fingers as he was turning the piece on a wheel. Late Meiji - early Taisho (1890s - 1910s) Japanese Arita round porcelain kogo (covered box for incense during tea ceremony) with sometsuke (underglaze blue and white) decoration. Painted in underglaze blue in Shonsui style: initial Shonsui ware is Chinese blue and white porcelain imported to Japan starting in the reign of Tianqi Emperor (1621-1627). Starting from the 18th century Arita kilns have been producing their own items in Shonsui style...
