Late Ming Dynasty, ca. 1600

Glazed with turquoise, amber and green enamels, this laughing Buddha holds his large belly with one hand, and clasps a rosary in the other. The back is unglazed and a stabilized hairline extends from the foot to the top of the base. There is a collection inventory number incised on the rear base and there is a small chip to the foot. It is accompanied by a later carved wooden base.

This metal box is fashioned as a model of a traditional stringed instrument having an overall punched floral design and a hinged lid. The base has an impressed seal. The surface has somewhat darkened with age. It is in overall good condition.

The interior of this dish is painted with a stylized dragon amid a concentric wave design, with the well having four elongated cloud designs. The underside has four “ruyi” fungus and a rectangular character in underglaze blue in the center. It is raised on a low foot, the base of which is not glazed, and the dense, white porcelain body is exposed. A few small pin pricks in the glaze, typical of older wares, are seen in the glaze here and there. The overall condition is very good, having no cracks or restorations.

The interior of this dish is decorated with a pair of phoenix birds in flight. The underside has four “ruyi” fungus in underglaze blue and an underglaze blue single character mark is painted on the center of the base. It is raised on a low footring, the base of which is unglazed exposing the dense, white porcelain body. There are some small pinhole glaze pricks with some darkening that is typical of older porcelain wares. A small glaze flaw can be seen on the interior wall, and there are some small areas of rim fritting. There are no cracks or restorations.

This two-handles stoneware vase's body is covered in a creamy slip glaze which is carved through with a peony design to reveal the light brown clay body. The entire vase except for the foot is covered in a very thin clear glaze enriching the tone of both slip and body. The light brown clay body is exposed on the footring and base. A small amount of burial earth adheres to the foot and base. It is in good condition.

This tripod censer is raised on three animal-masked feet that support its large, rounded body. The rim is decorated with a key fret design, and the body has ten lappets composed of stylized mask and key fret designs all in low relief. It retains its original brown patina overall with a deep greenish gray interior from use. Good condition.

This bowl is covered overall in an attractive bluish green celadon glaze except for the footring, which shows the buff-toned porcelaneous stoneware body. The glaze is somewhat unevenly applied to the exterior. The interior has a glaze bubble that popped in the firing. Acquired in the early 1980s from an antiques dealer in Alexandria, VA.

This two-part buckle is formed with a dragon head clasp on one piece, and the other is slotted for hooking under the dragon's head. Each has a central medallion cast in low relief of a double gourd “magic elixir” bottle. Both pieces are finished with a stylized bat motif. The underside of each has two attached pieces to receive the belt. Much gilding remains on the fronts, though worn. The reverse of each is ungilded and has old natural patina from use.

This vase is decorated in overglaze enamels over an imperial yellow enamel ground. The base has an apocryphal six-character Kangxi mark in underglaze blue. Two stylized handles glazed in coral enamel decorate the neck. The base and interior are glazed white. The footring is unglazed. It is in good condition. Acquired from the collection of Evangeline Johnson of the Robert Wood Johnson family.

This brush pot displays shallow carving with incising utilizing the natural “skin” of the bamboo to depict a scene of tortoise, cranes, and pine as a wish for longevity. The carver's name is incised beneath the pine tree. It is in good condition and has a nice patina. There is some wear to the interior from use. Acquired in London in the mid 1980s.

Ca. 1800s

This tea pot is inscribed with Chinese characters on one side, and has a bamboo motif incised on the opposite side. The handle and spout are sculpted to represent knotty tree limbs, and the lid is carved with leaves and stems. The maker's seal is impressed on the interior of the lid. It is in good condition and was acquired from my grandmother's antique shop in the mid 1960s.

Probably made in the Longquan kilns, this bowl is of flaring conical form and has incised longitudinal lines on the exterior. The exterior is glazed in pale olive-green celadon and the glaze stops well above the foot. The foot and base are unglazed, exposing the light-gray porcelaneous body. The interior is glazed throughout. There is a small chip to the outer rim. Purchased in Kyoto, Japan around 1975.

Wanli period, late Ming Dynasty, ca. late 1600s

This bowl is painted overall with a floral design in orange, green, and yellow enamels with black enamel outlines. The interior rim is decorated with a similar motif, and a single flower is painted on the interior base. The foot is encircled with double lines in underglaze cobalt blue and an underglaze cobalt blue design is painted on the base. The bowl has typical rim-fritting, and there is a small chip to the interior of the foot that has been repaired, and there is some expected wear to the enamels. Acquired in Washington, DC at Kenny and Higgins Antiques, around 1980.

This milky glass bottle is applied with four colors of glass and carved in relief with the symbols of the eight Taoist immortals. The sides have carved bat handles in black glass and the interior is well-hollowed. The stopper is pale whitish jade with a small apple-green splash. It is in good condition. Acquired in Norfolk, VA in the mid 1980s.
