An ancient Egyptian carnelian Scarab, c. 1200 BC, from the famous Mitry collection (see our Homepage). It is 3/8” long (9.5 mm). Relics of the Nile is pleased to present this very large and impressive Ptah-Sokar-Osiris figure. The figure features much of the original white gesso as well as facial features detailed in black. The eyes as well as the chin strap to hold the Osiride beard to the face are painted onto the gesso using a carbon-based black pigment. The figure measures a very large 17.25" in height and is presented on a wooden base for ready display...

This is an ancient Egyptian Scarab, c. 1250 BC, from the famous Mitry collection (see our Homepage). It is 5/8” long (16 mm) and made of steatite, an easy-to-carve stone that hardens when heated. Scarabs empowered life and resurrection and were often placed under mummy wrappings to protect the body and help it resurrect. This Scarab comes in a jewelry display cup. It was chipped by the artisan maker, who then used glaze to lock the piece back in place when it was fired.
