An interesting, small collection of ancient pottery items from a range of cultures, incl. Greece and Rome, 600 BC-200 AD.

The collection consist of:

- a large shard of pottery decorated with a high relief face of Appollon, Greek hellenistic period (fragmentary)

Interesting pottery flute in the shape of a bird. Greek dating to c. 600 BC.

The body is very nicely detailed with naturalistic bird features.

An old collection tag on the base: "No. 000693, v. Hassermann-Jordan Deidesheim."

Condition: A nice fragment with the head missing.

Lovely large vessel with twin, horizontal handles, in a fine style with decorated base, very impresive size, Attic / Corinthian c. 4th. century BC.

Size: 20,8 cm. in diameter over the handles and 11,2 cm. tall.

Condition: Choice Very fine, intact with lightly irridescent glaze, minor dings and wear to glaze.

A large for type attachment from a brazier, a pottery container for fire, molded within a rectangular framework and set vertically with the head of Silenos, his long full beard extended forward to form support for a vessel.

Size: 14 cm. wide and 12 cm. tall.

Large single-handled cup covered with fine quality black gloss inside and out. The deep bowl with an almost flat, inward sloping rim. Discoloration on the floor with the imprint from the foot of another cup. Standing on a low ring foot with reserved underside.

Black-glazed Apulian plate with gently raised, shallow floor. The low sloping rim with a flat top. Imprint from the foot of another dish and corresponding discoloration on the floor.
Low foot with a bevelled molding at the bottom. Slight fingermarks around the foot where the plate was held for dipping into the black glaze. Covered with a fine black glaze of metallic lustre...

Black glazed pottery lebes with tapering body and raised handles on the rounded shoulder. Thickened rim to accommodate a lid.
Traces of fingertips around the base where the vessel was held to be dipped into the glaze.
Lebes gamikoi were vessels associated with marriage rituals held for both the living and the unmarried deceased.

Attic black-figure band cup decorated with a lotus and palmette chain. The reserved tondo with concentric circles, a reserved band close to the inner face of the rim.
The gently rounded floor with a barely offset lip and upturned handles.

Daunian krater with globular body and short funneled mouth. The vertical loop handles on the shoulder area alternate with two red colored stumps.
Brown-red linear decoration around the body, wavy lines at the handle area, hanging semicircles inside the funnel opening.
One handled reattached with bone glue, a medium that was in use until the 1950s.

Warm brownish gloss with fingermarks around the base, where held during dipping.

Black-figure depiction of naked youths with clamydes that cover their shoulders and bystanders clad in cloaks. All figures hold spears.
The scene is framed with ivy garlands on the sides and buds alternating with dots on the marked shoulder. A row of tongues emerge from the ridged junction to the neck.
Applied red on the outer edge of the rim and the sideward rotelles, the ridged junction to the neck, the garments and the fillet of one youth. Faded white dot rosettes on some garmen...

Amphora handle with the name of the annual official Pausanias written around the Rhodian rose emblem.
The stamped text reads: ΕΠΙ ΠΑΥΣΑΑΝΙΑ ΣΜΙΝΘΙΟΥ – in the term of Pausanias, in the month Sminthios (March-April).
Three eponyms with the name Pausanias are known from Rhodian amphoras. Our example refers to Pausanias 3, who held office around 152 BC.
Pausanias 3 is associated with the Rhodian fabricant Timo 2, whose workshop was active from 175-150 BC. ...

Corinthian type skyphos of conical form with slightly curved wall. The triangular handles attached below the plain thin rim.
The handle zone decorated with dots, three bands below. Reserved surface is covered with a thin brownish wash.
The flaring ring foot with applied red-brown, single circle and central dot on the reserved bottom.
The shape is a Corinthian creation and also known as kotyle.

The vessel features a reel-shaped body with stepped foot and a flange. The doomed top with the head of Medusa at center. Medusa is rendered with a round face and curls ending in snake heads.
The pyxis is made in one piece and open at the bottom. The piece was not intended for concrete use and served as richly decorated burial object.
The surface shows remains of the original white engobe with gilded areas.

Thin-walled Attic skyphos with steep walls curving in at the rim. The tilted horizontal handles reserved on the inner side. Standing on a torus base, the underside enhanced with a carefully drawn dot and circle motif.
