Villains and travelers, Goblins and Priests, Various tales play out in 3 dimensions around the trunk and among the leafy branches of a massive tree forming the core and backdrop of this amazing 19th century altar bell stand. The piece is 6 inches (15.5 cm) tall, the same diameter. It comes enclosed in an old wooden box. This matches the Maezukue Altar table previously listed. One of the most elaborate I have ever seen.

A rare pair Korean badges for a civil official, dating to the Choson period. Embroidered in multicolored silks on blue figured silk with two cranes flying with a stalk of sacred fungus amidst clouds, above a taihu rock and waves. Bordered with gold wrapped thread. Glued on cardboard and mounted in antique wooden European frames. Condition: fine, slightly faded and few loose threads. Dimension: 24.8 cm x 23.1 (with frame), badges: approx. 22.5 cm x 21 cm.

Two Sometsuke tea containers decorated with scholarly scenes and lengthy calligraphic prose by Seifu Yohei I enclosed in a double wood box (ni-ju-bako) annotated by the fourth generation Seifu. They are 6.5 cm square, 13 cm tall. One has a some damage to the inner rim, a chip in the lid and a nick in the glaze of the bottom corner. Repairs can be performed at cost if desired

A very unusual Katana held in a saya (scabbard) made to look like a gnarled branch cut into a poor man’s cane. When pulled a spring-loaded mechanism releases two iron flanges creating a very effective tsuba hand guard. The blade is unsigned, measuring Nishaku nissun nibu {26-1/2 inches (67.3 cm)}. The remnants of a piece of paper remain glued to the saya with the name Masaaki Noma (?) written in cursive Roman letters, followed by UZUMASA, an area in Kyoto city...

Rare Japanese woodblock print kakemono (vertical diptych) by Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900) depicting Onoe Kikugoro V as Nikki Danjo, the archvillain of kabuki roles, transforming himself magically into a rat. The kabuki play “Meibuku Sendai Hagi” (“The Disputed Succession”), deals with an assassination attempt on Tsuruchiyo, a child who had inherited the position as head of a Semdai clan. Japanese Meiji period (1868-1912) Satsuma earthenware vase finely decorated around the circumference in polychrome enamel and gilt highlights with ladies and girls of the nobility engaged in leisure activities in an outdoor garden setting.
