Japanese Oribe Seto Ware Andon-Zara Dish - Edo Period

This stoneware dish is an andon-zara (or abura-zara), an oil lamp dish. It was made in the early 19th (or possibly late 18th) century, during the Edo period (1615 - 1868). It is particularly heavily-potted and has a flat, slightly concave base. It is coated in a crackled glaze and decorated in underglaze iron-brown, the pattern featuring three stylised flowers above what may be a fence. To the top right is an area of green glaze...

This is a very rare and highly desirable Changsha kiln 9th century Tang Dynasty bird water dropper. Usually these are characterized by such components such as under-glazed yelow-brownish and green motifs with molded design in relief, appliqué designs or impressed designs in relief and also incised or carved designs. The unique feature of the water dropper is the olive/brown glaze that is more like yue ware, but the paste and glaze is actually one of the rarest Changsha kiln products that exist...

Description:

A solid cast bronze toad was finely rendered in a vivid way.
By a crouching posture, the momentum was gathered fully by the frog which is ready for a flying bug.
The bronze piece was very well depicted not only the outlook but also in the details on the surface, the toad’s skin. The irregular lumps and bumps may not be delightful but were manufactured so well as to activate the bronze frog to a real one...

Classic 1960s Sigi Pineda Mexican silver modernist brooch in a design that looks to me like an angelfish albeit rendered in the most minimalist fashion. I consider Sigi's "niello" line one of the most inspired periods in his admittedly long and prolific career. I find that the metallic black/grey oxidation applied to some of the silver surfaces adds unsurpassed depth and sculpturality, something that in more traditionally crafted pieces is achieved by repoussage and hand-chasing. The fluidity of...

Kokeshi, wooden folk toy of NE Japan. Height: 12". This is an example of the "Yajiro-kei" tradition of Miyagi Prefecture. The artisan is Ishikawa Tokujirou, and is signed that he made it at the age of 69 years old. I have been unable to find his birth record, but believe this kokeshi to have been made during the 1970's or 1980's. For a brief story on "dentou" (traditional) kokeshi, please see our weblog, which is accessible through our Trocadero homepage.
