One of the best designs in early Mexican repousse work, the "feathers" makes for divine necklaces because of the gracious way the two halves of the piece meet at the center front - just take a look at the beauty of the swirls and twists and the playful, flirty way they touch yet at the same time "turn the back" on each other... I have had pieces in this design before - actually even a parure with Villasana's signature on it (I do believe that it's based on an early Los Castillo design possib...

A haunting vessel by Miyagawa Kozan enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Haku Korai Bin, Yukan Tsuki (White Korean form with free handles). This piece is the epitome of the elegance which came from Japanese working with traditional forms. Devoid of decoration, the shape stands alone among works by this famous artist. It is 10-1/2 inches (27 cm) tall and is in perfect condition. I will enclose a rosewood stand for display purposes with this vase...

Masterfully executed repousse necklace and earrings set, wrought in 980 silver, this is an great example of the quality and craftsmanship that came out of early Taxco. To my eyes the ribbed links (riveted at the back!) look like the scales covering Quetzalcoatl's - the feathered serprent's - body. They overlap perfectly and curve to hug the neck while positioning themselves in the best possible way to showcase their maker's mastery over his craft...

A rather difficult to find William Spratling necklace, this "disks and bead" design is playful, with a light-heartedness that makes you want to focus on life's good aspects and enjoy it as much as you can! This is a necklace that points to the organic relationship Spratling had formed with Mexico's rich folk culture and the creative ways he used traditional motifs in his work...

Until well into the 20th c. conducting one's own archaelogical dig was not prohibited in Mexico - both Spratling and Davis are known to have engaged in personal digs and their collections were frequently enriched by the fruits of those excavations. Quite often ancient, pre-Colombian beads as well as small stone artifacts that surfaced here and there were incorporated in pieces of jewelry silversmiths made in the first decades of Mexico's Silver Renaissance...

One of the best repousse figural brooches I have had over the years this is an early, stunning bird studded with blue and greenish blue turquoise cabochons. The repoussage is definitely the work of somebody who mastered the art - bold, deep, with excellent detail that has been accentuated with time by warmly glowing patina. If you have to portray a peacock, it better look like this one here! The brooch measures 4 1/8" tall by 1 7/8" wide (at its widest)...

A celebrated book piece Antonio Pineda's "crescent" design is a veritable feast for the eyes in its less-is-more combination of high purity silver and glistening black onyx. Undoubtedly a classic both when it comes to vintage Mexican modernist jewelry but also for Antonio collectors, the necklace's presence is powerful and attracts the eye in a way difficult to resist. The version presented here is my favorite - the links between the individual crescents are topped with a repousse semi-sphere...
