Rare Chinese Yuan Dynasty Burnished Black Pottery Meiping

We have recently been lucky enough to have acquired a collection of very rare examples of burnished black pottery items made during the Yuan Dynasty (AD 1279 - 1368). Such items are relatively unknown and very little has been published about them. They are found in the northern provinces, particularly Gansu province in the north-west.

Japanese Oribe Seto Ware Andon-Zara Dish - Edo Period

By the workshop of the renowned maker Ryubundo (signed Kinryu-do on the bronze lid), this iron tetsubin measures roughly 8 1/4" from tip of spout to other side, and the handle reaches just about 8 1/2" high. The exterior is decorated with a dragon that reaches around the entire pot, in and out of waves and cloudlike forms, the entire surface decorated with these traditional motifs and rock like textures...

Rare Vintage Georg Jensen Denmark sterling earrings no. 124 designed by Sigvard Bernadotte. Beautiful oval shaped dangles featuring a wrapped silver embellishment along the bottom. These are screw backs and measure 2" long and 1" wide. They are in fine vintage condition and signed as shown.

A great little 18Kt white gold openwork diamond ring is centered by an approximately 0.20Ct old-mine diamond. The center stone is flanked on either side by a smaller single cut diamond. The approximate total weight of all diamonds is 0.22Ct. The ring is a size 4 ¾ and can easily be sized.

In the last couple of years I found myself drawn closer and closer to the jewelry created by the Los Ballesteros workshop. I am especially attracted to their “mask” pieces in all the forms they can be found as well as to what I like to call their “hinged bangle” bracelets. I consider both kinds the absolute jewel in the taller’s creative crown and it seems that there is always something new and different to discover...

An amazing ring by famous Zuni artist John Gordon Leak. His work was prominently featured in the 1975 Sotheby's auction of the C.G. Wallace collection. John Gordon Leak was most well-known for his knifewing and dragonfly images. The central knifewing image is inlaid with shell and turquoise within a black jet background. Tall Chinese Ming Dynasty Stoneware Roof Tile Figure

This impressive architectural ridge tile figure was made during the latter part of the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644), most likely in Shanxi province. It depicts an official figure or guardian / deity figure standing on top of swirling clouds. It is coated in thick green, turquoise, black and straw-coloured glazes.

Chinese Song Dynasty Hare's Fur Bowl in Kiln Saggar (Ex. Grahame Clarke Collection)

This "hare's fur" bowl and kiln saggar were made during the Song Dynasty (AD 960 - 1279) and have been excavated from a kiln site in Fujian province. Presumably the temperature in the kiln during firing became too high, as the bowl is slightly misshapen and has become fused to the wall of the saggar by its glaze.

Chinese Western Han Dynasty Incised & Burnished Pottery Cocoon Jar

This wonderfully-shaped pottery jar was made during the early part of the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 8), or possibly the preceding Qin Dynasty (221 - 206 BC). This type of jar is usually referred to as a "cocoon jar" due to the shape of its body. Its original function was that of a grain storage jar. A nicely carved natural amber pendant of the Hand of Buddha Citron. There is a hole at the top on the piece so it can be worn as a pendant. The citron fruit may be given as a religious offering in Buddhist temples. According to tradition, Buddha prefers the "fingers" of the fruit to be in a position where they resemble a closed rather than open hand, as closed hands symbolize to Buddha the act of prayer. Nice large size, this bronze urn measures 12 1/4" across to looped handles, is 9 1/4" high, and the top lip is 10 1/4" in diameter. Measuring 8 inches long x 4 1/2 inches wide x 4 inches high, this colorful, 1920's, tin lithographed, wind-up toy featuring a Black Native Riding a Turtle is quite visually appealing!!

In very nice condition with minor scratches to paint here and there as seen in photos, this wind-up toy works, but the mechanism does have the tendency to stick a little. Marked J. Chein.
