Big, with pronounced repoussage, a series of beautiful turquoise cabs crowning the crest of the creature's shell, this vintage Mexican Deco figural brooch was most probably made in the country's capital as its workmanship indicates. This type of "high relief", textured repousse jewelry is reminiscent of Matilde Poulat's techniques and closely associated with Mexico City maestros...

One of my most favorite "less celebrated" maestros of Mexico's 20th c. Silver Renaissance, AEM is also referred to as "the Heart" artist because he signs his initials "AE" in a heart-shaped "M". Though we know that he had worked for Estela Popowski and Rancho Alegre, his identity remains elusive to this day...

Using a combination of azurite and malachite the Los Castillo taller created a fantastic line of jewelry based on the almost lost ancient Aztec art of stone inlay. The charm bracelet here is a fantastic example of the technique and one of the most interesting "Mozaico Azteca" pieces by the Castillos I have encountered. The Greek key links are connected with flexible, sturdy hinges and the stone mosaic is done in warm, earthy colors with accents of deep blue and greens...

Popular for centuries in jewelry-making traditions all over the world the buckle motif can be found in all forms and metals, with or without gems, quite elaborate or strikingly minimalist. This 1940s Hector Aguilar version is wrought in sterling and even though its ornamentation is kept at a bare minimum, its rendition is sculptural, an attribute that is enhanced by oxidation and the patina of time...

A fantastic alternative to the very hard to find Salvador Teran original, this set of earrings bears the signature of Taller Taxco. A very intriguing workshop, Taller Taxco's jewelry are all emulations of Teran's designs - and of very high quality at that. Though there is suspicion of a relationship between the two, nothing has been proven until today yet it's indisputable that the pair at hand comes very close to Teran's work...

Taller Taxco remains one of the mysteries that haunt our knowledge about maestros and workshops in Taxco's golden age. All their pieces that I have had have been high quality emulations of Salvador Teran's designs and the fact that their numbering system and a specific symbol they use in their hallmarks resembles Teran's own marks has created the idea that the two are somehow associated...

Signed by one of the best repousse makers of Mexico's 20th c. Silver Renaissance who unfortunately remains still unidentified, this clamper draws on the country's rich pre-Colombian past and is in fact based on a Los Castillo design, if I am not mistaken. Shaped like an imposing Maya or Aztec warrior with the most impressive headdress of feathers and gems the two wings meet at the front with the figures looking in different directions.
