This boy doll has a proud stance and a great outfit. His hands and feet are big and terrific. His hat is made out of a tin can! His clothes I think are original. Most cloth dolls probably don't have original clothes but there is an exception and that is, Boy Dolls. Boy dolls were often made for a boy and the doll didn't get played with the way girl dolls did. So that said, I do feel this doll is pretty much all original. He is heavy and packed pretty tightly with cotton and wool stuffing...
I was very surprised to find a Poppet doll dressed as a Native American. I looked up what tribes were in Kentucky and it turns out there were three or four. Shawnee, Cherokee, Chippewa and Chickasaw. So it is not surprising even in the first quarter of 1900 to have an Indigenous Poppet doll. She has on a wool skirt and a fine multicolored top. She has wooden rounded at the end arms and wooden legs covered with a gray wool leggings that have embroidery up the sides and leather shoes...

This doll is very beautiful with very delicate features. Her eyes are sewn on pieces of leather, one is only 3/4 there now. They are stitched on and her eyebrows are done with a cross stitch that is very effective. Her nose is raised and stitched and her mouth is a few stitches of red thread, probably more at one time. I don't see many pairs of dolls and boys dolls I don't think I have had another pair. The older Daryl looks like he is in control and rather sweet, younger Daryl has apparently gotten the short end of the stick. He is sad. This little doll look perky and ready to go have fun. She is hand sewn, her head is just a little floppy. Her lips look like she has stuffing coming out but actually her lips are sewn with a running stitch so the under has pushed the fabric up. So there is no damage on her face. She is a classic little homemade doll with no fancy frills. She is 17" tall but looks and feels like a smaller one. C. 1890
A very unusual and great topsy turvy doll with a watercolor painted face. She has blue eyes, a perfect little kewpie doll mouth, reddish hair and a flaunty hap framing her face. The black doll has a red bandana tied around her head, she has white eyes and mouth and a sensible yellow dress with a black checked apron. She is in good condition with just the back of her bonnet shredded a bit and there is age related staining. She is 14" end to end and is circa 1890-1910.
Baby is a big heavy plump doll, all original body and painted face. She has on a dress that fits perfectly but probably isn't original. Her face is worn a little but no damage, maybe it has darkened with age?

Under the great blue calico bonnet this doll has a worn and wrinkle face with a pencil dot for eyes and a pencil line for a mouth. Her nose has gone flat but the bonnet makes her look adorable. All hand sewn from the nicest of material, this topsy turvy has style and detail sewing. Both faces are painted, the black face is on egg wash cotton and the white side is on fine linen. Talk about an hour glass figure, this one is an exaggeration, you can see she has been carried around gripped at the waist and I little hand could have gone around her easily. From our African Collection: A short Mossi Doll from Burkina Faso, from the mid 20th century.
Owned by Mossi girls and women, small figures like these that we call "dolls" could function both as a toy for a young girl or as an object to promote the fertility of a woman.
This rag doll has the gift of giving comfort just by looking at her. She is a little soft, her dress has been on her forever and has wear here and there. Under her dress she is wearing undies that look original. She is all hand sewn with fairly big stitches but sewn really nicely. Her legs are large and sturdy with feet that point east and west. No big or even little boo boos other than a little hole at her mouth. Maybe too much kissing or maybe the act of feeding a little porridge now and then....

She is all wood, spoon shaped hands, long skinny legs with just a little bit of shape and a face that you know you have seen before, sitting on the cabin porch. This is a large Gertrude Rollinson in really good condition with wonderful clothes. She probably has been repainted at some point. She has on a long white cotton dress with a slip that is the same length as the dress, well below her feet. She has on white socks and white shoes and a crocheted bonnet. Not all black dolls have black bodies. Some of the best dolls I have had were dolls that the maker took an old rag doll and gave the doll a black head. In the Jim Crow era, it became common in the north for mothers to teach their children about the plight of African Americans, by making a black doll for them. This very nice hand-carved wooden doll and some original paint on the face and shoulders. She has a very round head, deep-set eyes and a nose carved and protruding but still out of the one piece of wood. Her legs were inset and pegged in place. Now she is a wonderful fragment 10" tall and mounted on a professional frame. (There are a few very old worm holes, please see close-up picture.) Circa 1800-1830.
