This has been interpreted by countless artists over the centuries. Our artist is Giacomo Picollo (1905-1988). Picollo created a number of watercolor landscapes which appear at auction...

Etching on paper, 16 1/4" by 14 1/4", with narrow metal framing, pencil signed at lower right by artist, who, if I read correctly the Russian on the reverse, is one VLADIMIR KOSTROMIN. An old original label on reverse has a 1978 date, so I would imagine the print dates to the late 1970's. The ink is a greenish black. Moisture has compromised the margins and mold stained and rippled them; reframing would help exclude that...

The scene is dominated by an old, impressive coast cypress tree with lots of character, its sheltering branches framing more distant offshore rock and a church with twin steeples...

The print is a restrike, likely made from the original plates at some point after the artist's death. Measurements are 7" by 8 3/4" inside the plate line (the sheet 11" by 15 1/4", and 16" by 18" as framed in worn black painted oak circa 1920 frame). Borein's place in the hierarchy of western American art is secure...

A striking mid century aquatint etching in colors by the noted European artist and print maker JOHNNY FRIEDLAENDER (1912-1992). The unframed print, 8 1/2" by 5 1/2" inside the present mat opening (sheet 13 1/2" by 9 1/2") is signed at lower right margin with the artist's distinctive signature and numbered 41/55 at lower left. Friedlaender was a pioneer in the aquatint process, having taught such artists as Rodo Boulanger...

A pencil signed color etching (aquatint), 11 1/4" by 9 3/4" (25" by 22 1/2" framed) by the major French-born artist ANDRE MASSON (1896-1987), numbered at lower left margin 43/50. The title is "Ame Errante" (Wandering Soul) and the work was published in the year 1973. Masson's major oil paintings have exceeded $900,000 at auction, with many over the $500,000 mark, yet his signed prints remain inexplicably affordable...

**FOUR** pencil signed, numbered color etchings of Parisian scenes, by the well-known, widely honored and sought after artist, ANDRE HAMBOURG (1909-1999). The matching set of prints, each numbered in Roman numerals V/XX (5 of edition of only 20), measure 12 1/4" by 9 1/4" inside the mat openings, and THREE are framed, one unframed (the framed ones including the frame measuring 18" by 14")...

From having checked the 1981 catalog raisonne by Daniel Marchesseau, I have determined that the most official title of this work is "Fillette aux Yeux Vertes" ("Young Girl with Green Eyes", although a number of other titles are in common usage for this essually popular print).
