This is one of the original works of Tokisada Nakamura, who signs as Masatoshi in this miniature sculpture that depicts Oni, the little demon, crossing a river in the company of a Man and a Woman. The Oni is carrying a skull ended mast, and he is holding on to the woman's arm. The man is carrying, over his left shoulder, a large Mokugyo and a couple of giant lotus flowers. He is picking up his robe to prevent it from getting wet...

Tombodama can be translated as “dragonfly ball” and the name is thought to come about because when the molten glass is applied to the core bead it resembles a dragonfly’s eye. Old (1930's) Japanese Boxwood Carved Netsuke Monkey & Trainer with Puppy Signed

The netsuke is 1.75 inches tall, and 1 inch wide.

It is in good condition with no repairs, chips, nor cracks, except missing an eye at the shishi mask (as seen in the photos).

Tombodama can be translated as “dragonfly ball” and the name is thought to come about because when the molten glass is applied to the core bead it resembles a dragonfly’s eye. This very well carved 20th century Japanese netsuke is 1 ½ inches high, 1 ¼ inches wide and a little more than 1 ¼ inches thick. It depicts a mouse bending over, scratching his chin. It is signed “Shozan”. The carving and polishing are just great and it is in excellent condition.
Netsuke of standing Jurojin (one of the 7 Gods of happiness, usually associated with longevity) holding a scepter with reishi fungus head, wearing a cape, a long robe and a spotted deer (the animal is a symbol of longevity) skirt. There is a nice detail for a netsuke lover - he is wearing an inro suspended by a manju netsuke. Excellent carving - see the detailing of his portrait quality face, incised fingernails, texture and spots of the deer skirt. Superb quality staining, beautiful patina...
